Road Cycling “It is by riding a bicycle that you learn the contours of a country best, since you have to sweat up the hills and coast down them. Thus you remember them as they actually are, while in a motor car only a high hill impresses you, and you have no such accurate remembrance of country you have driven through as you gain by riding a bicycle.” -- Ernest Hemingway

My" I got hit by a car" thread (pics of injuries)

Went out for a ride after work Saturday 6-21. About 6 miles from my house, going south I was riding in the shoulder at the time, I got struck from behind. The speed limit was 45mph, and after I broke the windshield with my helmet, I was thrown about 50 ft. I dont' have pictures of my bike yet, but my friend went to the police station to get it, and said it's a total loss. I have no broken bones, my right ear was partially torn away from my head, so 18 stitches there (my friends are calling me Vincent). Stitches in both knees, and a whole lotta road rash, and bruising. No internal injuries, or head trauma. Will be contacting a lawyer, and trying to get my hospital bills paid and equipment replaced. Probably be off the bike for two weeks, and then I'll have to meet the challenge of going back onto the road vs a MUP. Here's some pics:

Glad you're ok and the damage doesn't seem to be permanent. Good luck with the lawyer and restitution.

I'm glad that you''re gonna be OK. It could've been worse. Thank God you were wearing a helmet.

Very lucky indeed. That helmet certainly earned it's keep. Glad you're mostly ok.

A similar thing happened to me a couple weeks ago. I'm glad you're ok, the photos look pretty grisly.

Any word on what happened to the driver? Did they stop?

Hit from behind and you went through the windshield? Dang! The driver must have been off in la-la land to do that to you. Sorry to see it, but thankful you are o.k.!

First off I'm so glad you are OK. that is really scary.

I'm always stunned that the local cycling organization in Austin is still fighting the mandatory helmet law.

That is terrible!

It's good to see that you'll mend up decently in the end, and I hope you get everything you are due in court (lots)

a year or two ago I got rear ended in an empty parking lot, broad daylight, riding straight. Stupid stupid stupid. They are too lenient with licenses nowadays.

My rear wheel got tucked under the front of their car, (toyota camry) and my ankle got kinda torqued under there a little bit too. I got free and managed to crack the windshield a little bit with my carcass, then roll off to the side. She (high school girl) was really apologetic and nice about it, and took me to LBS and paid for a new wheel/tire/tube and helmet, then gave me a ride home, I was a little shooken up for a day or two. When I got back onto ride, i realized the frame was a little bent. The bike got traded for a nice cruiser a year later. Was my first commuter.

I'm just glad it was a camry and not an escalade or tahoe or something, i would have been smushed between car and pavement/bike

Rear-ended at 45 mph and only off for two weeks!? You're incredibly lucky.

Lets see bike pics!

And I'm sure Bell would like their helmet back - - they'll probably give you a discount on the replacement.

The driver did stop, but probably only because there were witnesses. I don't remember the crash, or the ambulance ride. The driver tried to tell the cops I rode out in front of him, but a witness told them I was on the shoulder. The car was insured, but the driver had a suspended license, and had a warrant. He was arrested and given several citations.

It was a male in his mid fifties....I haven't gotten the police report yet to see what he said as far as why he didn't see me. I had a bright yellow with black accents jersey on.

I think I speak for everyone on BF when I say that "I'm glad you're OK".

While it was not your fault, this story and associated photos show the value of wearing a helmet, being aware at all times and riding defensively when possible, and (it goes without saying, but I will anyway) being aware / respectful of bikers when driving.

Here's to a quick recovery... cheers.

Dooooood you look like your in rough shape but think of how bad it could have been. Since the guy who hit you lied I say rail him in the courts. Glad you got some good witnesses. Good luck with a speedy recovery and I hope you'll be able to ride the roads again without fear - might take a while...

Glad you're alive and ok dude. The driver needs to go to jail immediately and not be let out for a while.

An old lady hit a biker out here last year. Same story as yours. This biker didn't make it though.

Thank God there was no permanent damage. Lucky man!
