Road Cycling “It is by riding a bicycle that you learn the contours of a country best, since you have to sweat up the hills and coast down them. Thus you remember them as they actually are, while in a motor car only a high hill impresses you, and you have no such accurate remembrance of country you have driven through as you gain by riding a bicycle.” -- Ernest Hemingway

Helmet Visor

I just bought a helmet and it has a removable visor. My previous helmets didn't have one and I seem to get by with just sunglasses, but maybe it wouldn't hurt to use it. Unless, of course, I look too much like a dork.

P.S. When I ride my commuter bike I don't care that I look like a Fred, this is for my alter-ego road bike set-up though :-)

They're a little silly and catch wind, but I keep mine in the drawer and pop it back on for rainy days, they're usually just long enough to block the rain from coming in over the tops of your glasses at speed.

When you are in the drops, a visor forces you to raise your head a little further to see down the road, and that can be hard on the neck. I think that is why you don't see visors on most road helmets.

Just get one of these for when it rains, or when you want a little shade.

ditch the visor unless you mountain bike.

when you ride in the drops, visors obstruct your vision. That's the difference between MTB helmets and road helmets.

Its got nothing to do with being a fred.

That's also why cycling caps have the bill made to flip up easily

I ws riding the last two years with an old mtn bike helmet, visorus intacto. went on a small group ride, one of the guys pulled it off my helmet, crushed it and said "don't ever let me see that again."
dude made me laugh my ass off.
riding w/out the visor has made it easier on my neck though, especially when trying to look ahead and through downhill curves.

Coming from the dirt side, I have a visor on my helmet. There has been times when it helps block the sun, but I can adjust the angle of it to as needed to prevent the "extra looking up" others have mentioned.

Tough call, but in the end it is YOUR decision!

Good luck,
Chris

On sunny days, if I'm out of sunscreen, I'll wear a cycling cap under my helmet to shade my face. I hate getting the "reverse racoon" tan. However, if its hot, my head starts to boil and I take it off.

Most importantly though, I don't look like a Fred with a helmet visor .... fashion over function.

It's also why the classical bike hats allowed the visor to be flipped up.

Guess I look silly. I don't like sun getting in the tops of my glasses... bothers my eyes. My head is low enough that it doesn't catch any wind (it's a vented visor).

Totally worth it on rainy rides.

Visors are on Mountain Biking helmets because going into and out of shade and sun like you have when there's broken tree cover can cause your "night"/dark vision to be impaired. That's not good if you're bombing a single track. Use the visor to keep your eyes "in the shade".

They don't have much use when you're road riding.

Right. 'cuz there are never any trees near roads.

I also have to wear glasses, and the visor makes a big difference. Not just for rain, but it keeps things from flying behind my glasses and hitting me in the eyes as often. Contacts with my prescription are just too thick for my dry eyes. Contacts for me also are heavily weighted on one end, and get blurry when they get out-of alignment (rotate due to moving head in drops, stuck to my dry eyelids, etc.).
