Road Cycling “It is by riding a bicycle that you learn the contours of a country best, since you have to sweat up the hills and coast down them. Thus you remember them as they actually are, while in a motor car only a high hill impresses you, and you have no such accurate remembrance of country you have driven through as you gain by riding a bicycle.” -- Ernest Hemingway

Anyone know anything about this bike?

I'm not to knowledgeable on bike components, so I was wondering if you guys could tell me if this bike is decent.
I bought it about 4 years ago when I got into biking and I really didn't care if the bike was that good so I was looking for an inexpensive bike. Someone from my bike club offered me this one for $200 and a couple of people told me the bike was actually pretty good and I got a good deal. So I was wondering what you guys though, and hopefully someone could price it out.

So here it is

It looks like it has shimano dura-ace shifters and rear de railer.
front de railer and cranks are shimano 600.
I don't really know anything else.

Thanks

I'd say give it a good cleaning and then re-post the picture. Dura Ace and 600 are quite good, so I think you got a decent deal on that bike.

you got a good deal. Except for that seat, I think they guy might actually owe you money for leaving that on there (that and trying to shove it up your rectum)

Seriously, though, lugged steel basso with 8 speed DA (some people value this stuff highly) -- worth WAAY more than $200 if you ask me. Hell, you could probably get some idiot kid out here in SF to pay $200 for that frame

Dura-Ace = Shimano's top group set... that's an amazing deal.

But yeah, get yourself a real saddle. Black Brooks B17 anyone?

Thanks,
Yes I never really liked the seat, it is very uncomfortable, but when I tried to remove the seat it wouldn't budge. I took everything I could to it besides a torch or anything else that would ruin it and it just wouldn't move. I eventually was able to raise it just enough to be at the correct height but I still have yet to remove it.
I will probably invest in a bike seat once I get into biking again. Lately I have just done very short bike trips.

Ok well I made this thread a year ago and recently I've been biking more and wanting to upgrade/fix some things on my bike and would like to know more about it.

You can see the pictures above and here is what I know it has.

Dura-ace shifters and rear derailer
Shimano 600 front derailer, rear hub, and brakes
Basso Frame
Shimano 105 crank
Italmanubri Stem
Front hub is unknown but there is a logo on it. It kind of looks like an S but the top half is a blue block and the bottom is a red block
Wheels - I dont know. It says Maxtal s6000 open pro on them. It also says SUP. I've looked all of this up with very little luck on finding info.
Michilin Hi-Lite Prestige tires
Cloud 9 saddle

I'd really like to know more information about the wheels and hubs as I might be looking to upgrade these if they are crappy. The rear wheel is out of true and if these wheels aren't very good then I'll just buy new ones and not spend time on these ones. Also my current tires have VERY bad rubber rot and I want to purchase new ones but I don't even know where to start.

So I guess what I'm asking is, what if anything should I upgrade on this bike since I plan to be a more serious rider. Right now I'm just looking at buying a new wheelset and tires and possibly a stem as the one I have seems too long.

Maybe it's just the crappy photos, but those chainrings look pretty worn out. If it were me, I'd go all in, and put a new mid-level groupset on it, new wheels and seat.

A low budget option would be new wheels/tires and a new seat, along with a proper fitting. Then decide if the stem is too long. Clean up the rest, maybe replace cables/housings, and see how it rides.

Or, just part it out, and buy something more modern. Since it has more-or-less horizontal drop-outs, the frame could no doubt be transformed into a fetish object for the fixster crew...

The chainrings are pretty worn down but not as bad as it seems in the picture.

I would love to part it out and buy a newer bike but money is pretty tight. My dad has a Trek Pilot 5.2 and that rides extremely nice but that is just a "tad" out of my price range.

How are the Bontrager Race Lite Wheels? Also what is a decent tire that would be good for them?

I mostly ride on roads, usually pretty rough roads though as they are city roads and I'm not an extremely hard rider.
