Where do you carry the third water bottle?

Road Cycling “It is by riding a bicycle that you learn the contours of a country best, since you have to sweat up the hills and coast down them. Thus you remember them as they actually are, while in a motor car only a high hill impresses you, and you have no such accurate remembrance of country you have driven through as you gain by riding a bicycle.” -- Ernest Hemingway

Where do you carry the third water bottle?

On rides that require more liquid replenishment than one can carry in two bottle cages, where do you carry the third bottle?

On my last longer ride I had a quart of sport drink in the trunk, but if it weren't for the need to carry it along, I wouldn't have even brought the trunk in the first place. There must be a good solution other than camelbacks -- they make me too sweaty.

Refilling doesn't seem to be a convenient option for the route I take on my long-ish ride.

My hybrid has braze-ons for a cage on the under side of the down tube. But I wouldn't be comfortable riding that bike at distances great enough to benefit from a third bottle. My road bike lacks that third-cage mounting location.

Allow me to now commit heresy in this forum:

EDIT: I actually use one, but only on rides of 50 miles or more.

This time of the year I carry three bottles, two on the bike, one in my center jersey pocket.

some triathlon types sport one that mounts off the back of the seat.

I thought about that (the tri-type seat-mount type), but then the wedge won't fit... or else I'm committing myself to a whole wedge / cage / tool contraption, which sounds both expensive and dorky for a rider who is just putting on 50+ miles alone, not racing or anything.

Bingo.

It's a good idea to carry 3 bottles if you're climbing to Mt. Baldy Village from GMR. I took 3 bottles when I did Crystal Lake, and almost died - next time I'm taking 4.

Depending on your route, it's a good idea to take 3 bottles on some Angeles Crest variations as well.

You use more than 2 bottles for 50 miles?
I live in Florida and just did 32 miles and didn't finish 1 bottle. I use Polar with some Gatorade powder.
Maybe use bigger bottles, like 24 oz.

More times than not my third bottle only has water in it and I use it to cool myself off.

Left-most jersey pocket or center pocket. It's usually full of Gatorade mix. I might even refill the regular water bottles in cages before I want to finish the Gatorade.

I've recently bought a Camelbag Slipstream. It's especially for road-bikers (sits high on your back) and haven't regretted buying it for a second.

on longer rides, i sometime use a 1L platypus bladder placed in the middle jersey pocket. i clip the drinking tube/hoser to the jersey's collar. much more comfortable than using a camelbak.

I like to think I will bump into a drinking fountain, but out in the mountains, that is not always possible. Usually that is how I get my third bottle during longer rides. Wish I did not hate the hot spot generated by Camelbaks, but I do. I will only take a Camelbak is such intense heat makes me think I might suffer heat exhaustion.

on the rare occassions I need 3 bottles I carry one in my jersey.

Buy gatorade with the waterbottle top. Then you can throw that bottle away when you're done, and you don't have to lug an empty bottle in your jersey.
