Road Cycling “It is by riding a bicycle that you learn the contours of a country best, since you have to sweat up the hills and coast down them. Thus you remember them as they actually are, while in a motor car only a high hill impresses you, and you have no such accurate remembrance of country you have driven through as you gain by riding a bicycle.” -- Ernest Hemingway

Dropped some stupid poseurs today.

"I was about halfway through my normal Thursday tempo ride around Berkeley Lake when I spotted the two poseurs. The were nearing the top of the next hill. I could tell they weren't serious riders because they weren't wearing helmets but they had all of the other poseur traits, new team jersey and shorts, with clean shoes.

As I pedaled up behind them they had to have heard me but pretended I wasn't there. Stupid poseurs. As we headed down the small hill into the valley I had to coast behind them because they were riding two abreast, taking up the whole road like they owned it. They obviously weren't real riders because they were going slow down the hill, leaning back and putting their brakes on. It was at that point I decided to teach them a lesson!

As the stupid poseurs got near the bottom of the hill they leaned forward on their machines preparing for the climb up the next short but steep hill. I was able to meet their pace without a problem as I have raced. I was only working at 70% of my FTP and I had plenty of reserve power. I coolly pulled up alongside the one at the back and said "wanna race?". He took the bait and said back to me "sure, uphill will be no problem". He looked at me, thinking because his machine was newer than mine that he would have no problem beating me. Boy was he wrong!

I began to accelerate. He matched me at first and I let him think he was going to win but then I dialed my power meter up to 500 watts and droped the hammer on him. As I flew by him I looked back to see him frantically urging his machine up the hill but it was obvious that his power was much lower than mine. I easily passed his stupid poseur partner as well. As I crested the top of the hill I looked back once more to see two defeated, sad poseurs struggling up the hill. Maybe my little "lesson" will teach those two that they have no business riding on the road."

How's that for a re-creation of one of the ultimate BF "dropping a poseur" thread?

This actually happened to me today except the "poseurs" were on Segways (machines). It was one of the funnier things that I have seen while riding. This couple was obviously having a great time riding their (seemingly) brand new Segways around this lake. I came upon them and coasted behind them as they went down a small hill then I came up next to the guy and asked him if he wanted to race. He laughed and leaned forward on his Segway to try to get it to go faster uphill. Those things can actually move pretty good and I had to work a little bit to pass them.

They looked like they were having a great time on those things but I just don't see the fun in them. I guess if I'm going to pay several thousand dollars for something with two wheels, I'd rather get a bike than something that has a top speed of 18mph and needs to be recharged. Oh, well they seemed to be having fun and I guess that's all that matters in the end.

Please condense this to 50 words or less and re-post it. You're writing a BF entry, not a cover article for the NY Times Magazine.

lol, those segways are maddingly fast, our lab has one of the older models and it rips up pavement.

I wish I could afford a segway.

We have a lot of Segways in DC for tour groups. It's pretty hot and humid in the summer and not having to walk would make the tour a lot more pleasant.

The trick is to have no imagination or better yet, no thought process -- call it a state of BF transcendental meditation. To be here, you must master this skill....

hmm...so what makes one a poseur? I just got a bike, and am admittedly slow with little riding stamina...I do however wear cleats, shorts and a jersey (mostly from MEC in Canada, so pretty non descript stuff..no logos or anything).... I struggle up (small) hills, etc. and I use a camelbak for longer rides....
does this make me a poseur?
(i can't believe I'm writing this but this is actually a genuine question)....I don't want to piss any real riders out there...

It's funny, the first thing that went through my mind when I came upon the two Segway riders was the original version. I couldn't get it out of my head so when I got back home I had the "bright" idea of re-creating the original version using the Segways because the whole idea of dropping someone riding a Segway, and bragging about it, is just funny.

In the real world, I don't brag about dropping anyone because as I see it, anyone who rides is doing something positive and I have no right to judge them for that. And besides, I get dropped plenty so I have no room to talk.
