Road Cycling “It is by riding a bicycle that you learn the contours of a country best, since you have to sweat up the hills and coast down them. Thus you remember them as they actually are, while in a motor car only a high hill impresses you, and you have no such accurate remembrance of country you have driven through as you gain by riding a bicycle.” -- Ernest Hemingway

First Century

My wife did her first century today. We did it together on the tandem. Great weather, and a strong steady group. Did the 100miles in 4:35, with a riding time of 4:19,and an average of 23.1mph.

I know it was a lot faster than my first century, And I'd bet it's faster than most folks first centuries.

Now its time for Beer and the Pool.

Good work! You guys deserve a beer or two. That is a fast century, even for a tandem. I bet there were some people happy to be riding in your draft.

Next stop, the Everest Challenge, right?

Excellent! You both look like you just finished an easy 20 mile spin, not a sub 5 hour century. When does the hard part start?

It's faster than any century I've done and I may have just done my 44th century, that's like TDF speeds! But again I have never done a century in Florida or the flatlands. I still doubt I'll ever go that fast. Congratulations!

awesome!
I need to show my wife this post (bought her a MTB a few years ago - she's used it once [to be fair, we've got two very young kids and no family in town to help out]).

How much did you guys train for this ?

Oh -- and, not had any wheel truing issues with such a load on low-spoke-count wheels ?
I'm guessing if you break just one spoke you're screwed ?

Unfortunately I think we've got a few more steps to accomplish. The way I have it thought out is 1) complete a century, 2) complete a hard century with lots of climbing, 3) complete back to back centuries on consecutive days, 4) complete back to back hard centuries, 5) do 4 at Race Pace.

So 1 down 4 to go.

How are you going to get the bike from Fla to CA for the race? Can you ship a tandem?
