Road Cycling “It is by riding a bicycle that you learn the contours of a country best, since you have to sweat up the hills and coast down them. Thus you remember them as they actually are, while in a motor car only a high hill impresses you, and you have no such accurate remembrance of country you have driven through as you gain by riding a bicycle.” -- Ernest Hemingway

Do they suck or am I good?

This is my first summer on a roadbike and I placed 3rd overall in a TT Hill Climb. Riding a steel Centurion LeMans RS. I beat a lot of people decked out in nice gear riding $2000+ bikes (notably a man on an aero Cervelo.) SO the question is, are they wasting their money buying this nice gear or am I just good at this sport?

Take some vacation time and do an omnium somewhere.

If you take a podium spot after those three days are over, ask your local shop/club for a sponsorship and get after it.

I am riding the Copper Triangle this August in CO, if anyone else is doing that. I really like this sport, finally something I'm good at and dont have to be huge to win at. (16 years old, 119 pounds, 5' 9")

It is with great hesitancy and trepidation that I tell you that you actually MAY not be too fat for this sport. That's a lonely place to be in a fat fat fatty world.

If they ask why you are wearing "tights", ask them why they are fat and jobless.

Works for me.

It's because you're so thin - that's a huge advantage going uphill. When you can beat them on the flats too, you've earned bragging rights.

Congrats on the debut.

Remember that riding ability/skill and disposable income will forever be two different things. Not to say that there aren't guys with mad skills who are rich enough to buy a $10K rig, but there are bad cyclists on fancy bikes, bad cyclists on cheap bikes, etc. etc.

Save your cash to upgrade, and in the mean time find a team with a good relationship with a shop. That'll help for now...

Not to rain on the parade--it's still cool that you did so well in your first race--but that ain't where the climbers live. Of course, at our mere mortal level all that matters is what's in your region. Either way, work on getting fast in the flats, and race smart. A small skinny guy will be at a disadvantage in the flats.

5% grade is just perfect for my fat a55.

Even though I live in Florida where things are flat (with occasional places with +10% grades but for woefully short distances) I have ridden in places where there are grades in excess of 10% for miles on end (North Georgia and western NC). Now THAT is a hill climb.

And BTW, congrats! Now that you have the "bug" keep riding. The "engine" is way more important than the bike.

The Engelman legend:

Mike Engelman won his first race - a Pro-1-2 hill climb and set a new course record in the process. They were so sure he cheated they DQ'd him. He went back the next year and broke his own record under the watchful eyes of the referees. In the meantime he went from Cat 5 to Cat 1 in one season.

Or so I've been told...
