Road Cycling “It is by riding a bicycle that you learn the contours of a country best, since you have to sweat up the hills and coast down them. Thus you remember them as they actually are, while in a motor car only a high hill impresses you, and you have no such accurate remembrance of country you have driven through as you gain by riding a bicycle.” -- Ernest Hemingway

Crit Riding 101

1. Stay near the front of the pack
2. If you crash, hit hay

from a crit I rode yesterday in San Luis Obispo.

Nope, not me. I stayed in front and got beat on the sprint by that kid in blue and white. It was a really fast race and very chaotic.

4) Don't wear a pro jersey unless you are racing for the team in that race. Especially don't wear a now defunct pro jersey.

5) If you feel the need to wear a tuxedo jersey....then reverse 4.

wow, the fact that there is hay on the course is a clear indication this is not a crit worth riding.

Yeah, I'm torn too. Sure proper form is to get your can out of there, but as a practicing EMT with little hope of winning, I'm inclined to look since I will end my race if the guy needs help NOW. Then again, medical support at our races is generally pretty slim.

I am as compassionate (and as curious) as the next guy, but this type of full head tilt is a prelude to an even larger crash. Keeping one's head attentive to the race is neither necessarily about the competition nor a lack of concern for the fallen comrade as it is about ensuring safety.

It is sort of human instincts to look. The more appropriate instinct is to get out of the saddle and pound.

These two things have a lot to do with putting food on my table, both literally and figuratively.

Very well put! And while it may be human nature to look, but that almost always causes another crash. And if you are racing and a guy crashes, how, going past him at 25+mph are you going to be able to determine if he needs help? You'd be by him too fast.

Where did I say anything was wrong with John Deere? I just thought your pointing out that it was actually straw was pointless so I asked a question of you hoping you could explain your desire to be Capt. Ag

Ah, the cat 5 race. Didn't realize there was a crash. From the name of the guy that won, I'm guessing that he is the brother of the guy that got second in the 3s race, and an occasional poster here. There was a crash right at the finish in my race. I have some pics I'll post later.

Being in the front of course does not guarantee that you will not be involved in a crash. In saturday's road race, the guy in the front caused an accident that took out several of the first few riders. My teammate went down hard, and another teammate and I narrowly avoided it, but it killed the sprint for us.
