Road Cycling “It is by riding a bicycle that you learn the contours of a country best, since you have to sweat up the hills and coast down them. Thus you remember them as they actually are, while in a motor car only a high hill impresses you, and you have no such accurate remembrance of country you have driven through as you gain by riding a bicycle.” -- Ernest Hemingway

Sidi Dominator 5 with speedplay frogs: spikes required?

Interested in trying the sidi dominator 5/speedplay frog combo, have read up a bit, wondered if anyone has long term impressions of this combination.

I read that the spikes for the dominators are pretty much required in order balance the wear on the soles.

I need a walkable cleat for my daily commute, my zeros aren't cutting it.

Thanks

I have been using Dominator 5's and Frogs for the last couple of years and I couldn't be more pleased. I've never used any spikes, nor felt like I needed to. This setup has my full recommendation.

I have the Speedplay Frogs on my MTB, love them. I'd use them on a road bike if I were more Fredly for sure. And there is no better way to express and embrace your Fredosity than MTB pedals on a road bike.

Do it.

nothing wrong with looks for commuting. I don't see why people stay away from them, I don't want to have 2 different shoes for commuting and for actual riding. If i'm commuting I have enough bagspace to pack a pair of walking shoes

Used Dominators for road/commuting for a long time and I've never heard anything as odd as that.

Please link the source so we can all se their reasoning as it seems very strange to me.

Don't run red lights, wear a helmet, use hand signals, get some cycle lights(front and rear) and, FFS, don't run red lights!

I've been using Dominators for the past 650 miles. They're great. I don't have toe cleats on them, and don't feel I need them. I use them with SPD pedals though.

And yes, I realize that this is embracing Fredocity. Fine with me; I'm enjoying riding.

Can't comment on the Domiators, but Speedplay Frogs are wonderful pedals for commuting/MTB.

If you saw some of the get-ups I am sporting during the various commuting seasons, you would need to establish a new Fredosity scale to describe my look. In the winters I sometimes wear long underwear, jeans, and hiking boots while commuting.

As with everything Fred, only hardcore roadsters have "Fred-sense." The average citizen passing a bike commuter in a hallway sees only the odd gait caused by the stiff road shoe and gigantic zero cleat, hears only the clickety-clack of the cleat on the tile. Ironically, the average citizen, if asked to describe the look of a bike commuter in full battle (read non-Fred) regalia, would call him a dork. If said commuter chooses a more comfortable arrangement that screams Fred, the average citizen won't even notice him.

In the end, I'm looking for something that will enable me to move more naturally while off the bike. So, in this case -- as in most cases during my cycling life -- I will have to embrace my Fredosity.

I've not experienced the "rapid wear" and "flexy soles" some reviewers claim, but what does 100kg+ of me know . Neither were my dominators in the "extremely expensive" bracket so either they didn't shop around to check prices or they bought them as son as Sidi changed the model.

It's all moot anyway because I've switched to Sidi SRS so I don't have to replace the shoe as the sole material wears out. The dominators probably lasted ~2years for commuting, road riding, off road duties, etc., before the sole on the left one, my unclipped foot, got really low and exposed >50% of the height of the cleat.

I don't use that shoe, I use Diadora X-Trail carbon.

Had I put the toe spikes on my Diadoras they would have been literally impossible to walk in on normal rides. If the toe spikes are similar, I wouldn't use them for commuting.

Just bent over and picked up my Sidi's off the floor. I think they are about 3 years old, and maybe 8000 mile. (I switch between them a pair of Sidi winter shoes and a pair of Shimano spd sandles). Nope soles havent really worn that much. The only time the get spikes put on them is for Cross season. Cleats are starting to wear some, might be about time to replace them
