DIET: The Healthy Breakfast Shake

I have just discovered the beauty of a loaded morning fruit smoothie, and how powerful it really is in filling up the stomach and suppressing hunger. However, I'm not sure if it's the healthiest of sorts. Here's my recipe:
  • 4 strawberries without tops
  • 1 ripe banana, peeled and sliced
  • 1 scoop of Gianni's Vanilla Ice Cream
  • Approx. 1/2 cup whole milk
  • 2 tablespoons of oatmeal
  • 2 or 3 cups of ice
Can anyone recommend an even healthier alternative that's just as tasty, and just as filling?

Thanks!

My mom just does still frozen berry mix, and soy milk.

subframe 07-23-08 05:06 PM

umm, I'd suggest losing the ice cream

:D

I use yogurt instead (usually low fat, but sometimes fat free), and no ice. It's great.

your milkshake looks interesting, but you might want to ditch the whole mile for 2% and the oats can be ditched for whey or protein powders. Also, the ice cream is just fattening and I would say at least go with some low fat ice cream or frozen yogurat or maybe even normal yogurat. Even crushed ice helps to add concistency to the mix.

might want to try peaches or other berries as well.

Substitute yogurt for the ice cream and you're golden!

MrCrassic 07-23-08 05:12 PM

I'm using the oats for now because I can't afford the protein powder (yet). I'll try it with 2% to see how it is.

I'm also using the Vanilla ice cream for now because it's low fat and my supermarket doesn't carry frozen yogurt. (Believe it!) I've done it with frozen yogurt, and there's no difference in taste.

Plus, I usually drink that before going on a pretty hard commuting ride, so the added ice cream doesn't do (too) much damage.

+1. You could also use low fat or skim milk instead of the whole milk, although I am not sure it will fill you up for as long if you do.

Just eat lots of plain oatmeal (preferably the steel cut variety). It's about as filling and as healthy as you can get. It doesn't score huge points in the tasty category, but it grows on you.

my favorite shake is:

*2 scoops of shaklee vanilla mix
*1 cup of water
*2 cups of ice
*1.5 cups of apple jacks
*one cap full (i guess its like a teaspoon) of vanilla extract

seriously, its awesome-its kinda got that 4:1 ratio i think.

Well substitute whole milk for 2%, 1% or fat free, and instead of ice cream try some yogurt again you have a choice of plain, light and fat free. I like to make my smoothies with fat free milk, Dannon Light Fat Free Vanilla yogurt, and then add either Fage Fat free Greek yogurt, or some other Fat free yogurt if I want it a bit thinner. I don't usually add ice.

Is this an ad for Gianni's Vanilla Ice Cream?

At this point it's on my "don't buy" list.

oatmeal oatmeal oatmeal for breakfast! I have a shake for getting me through the afternoon. Instead of ice cream, use unsweetened almond milk(vanilla or chocolate) and then sweeten with the natural herb stevia powder(100% natural and no aftertaste!).
Heres my shake recipe:
-300 calories
1 cup almond milk
2 scoops Biogenesis Ultralean powder
1 cup berries or 1 banana
1/8 teaspoon stevia powder for sweetening

TromboneAl 07-23-08 05:39 PM

Here's my recipe:

8 oz fat free milk
1 tsp chocolate powder
1 tsp metamucil (adds body to the shake)
1 banana
2 tsp chunky peanut butter
5 ice cubes
1 tsp jelly (optional)

Try it, you'll like it.

i'd say ditch the ice cream (maybe substitute soy yogurt and a bit of ice, it'll do the same thing), use soymilk instead of 2%, substitute oatmeal with walnuts, and add some ground up flax seeds (not too much, blech).

Body Fortress brand whey powder is what you need. Usually $12-13 per 2lb tub at Wally World and Target, has 30 1-scoop servings, each serving is 26g of protein. Cheapest on the market, they're starting to advertise in Men's Health magazine and other pub's.

I mix a scoop of it with a scoop of Endurox recovery drink after a hard workout (I lift also, so I want more protein.)

It makes a heck of a smoothie, I fix myself one every once in a while for a filling snack. Comes in Vanilla and Chocolate. Mmmmm.

If you were looking for marketing in my post, then you should be disappointed.

I only bought it because it was cheaper and the names were catchy (Central Park, Wall Street, etc. etc. etc.)

BTW I bought a huge thing of Vanilla yogurt to substitute. When I was in NC, I found this amazing frozen yogurt that tasted EXACTLY like vanilla ice cream. It was fat-free too!

MrCrassic 07-23-08 08:09 PM

Smoothies without ice? I thought that was a necessity...?

Protein powder is like salmon, there is no reason to buy and eat it unless its high quality. Don't skimp on protein powder and do your research, it does make a huge difference.

If it were up to me, I would put some of that GNC high-qual protein instead of oatmeal, and the frozen yogurt, but right now I have to work with frozen yogurt and oatmeal.

Oatmeal's not bad for you anyway!

tinrobot 07-23-08 08:51 PM

My shake -

Banana
Some Blueberries
Maybe some whole strawberries or some other fruit
Half cup soy or almond Milk
1 scoop protein powder
1 tbsp whole yogurt
Dash of cinnamon (tastes good and helps control blood sugar)
Maybe a few spinach leaves (doesn't affect the taste, but adds good green stuff)
Maybe a little oatmeal or oat bran (if I want more fiber - also thickens it)
Fill the rest with water.
Blend

I find that smoothies can get very sugary, so I use whole fruit and avoid lowfat yogurts (which replace the fat with carbs) The cinnamon also helps a lot with moderating any glycemic spikes.

Frisco 07-23-08 11:30 PM

My daily:

2-4 baskets of strawberries, blueberries, blackberries, and/or raspberries
occasionally half a mango, apple, kiwi, or some melon when berries aren't in season
tbsp of unfiltered flax oil
1 or 2 scoops of protein powder
fresh organic soy milk

Word

One cup with some peanut butter is cheap, filling, and will get you riding like a superhero.

redmist 07-24-08 12:06 AM

i usually have this after my morning ride.

1 or 2 organic bananas
a bunch of frozen organic berries (usually blueberries, but can use strawberries, blackberries- any kind of berry will suffice)
heaps of plain organic lowfat yogurt
1 scoop field of greens powder
1 scoop of rice protein
vitamin c powder
vitamin b capsule broken open
1 squirt flax seed oil
tablespoon of pomegranate juice concentrate

it tastes pretty good, maybe not as good as using ice cream and whole milk, but it's much, much, healthier than that first recipe.
