Road Cycling “It is by riding a bicycle that you learn the contours of a country best, since you have to sweat up the hills and coast down them. Thus you remember them as they actually are, while in a motor car only a high hill impresses you, and you have no such accurate remembrance of country you have driven through as you gain by riding a bicycle.” -- Ernest Hemingway

Cheap Double Crankset - and triple to double ?'s

Hello!

I'm looking for a cheap double crankset. I'm really sick of this triple that came on my bike. From what I've heard. I don't need a new FD. I'm hoping for sub $80, as I am currently broke. Also, will I need a new rear derailleur, I can get a great deal on a shortcage if need, but I have to be quick.

Thanks everyone!

Nashbar has campy centaur cranksets for 80 bucks, they're the ones that need the ST bottom bracket. I have a centaur compact with a veloce BB and I really like it.

You can get the veloce ones for 80ish bucks with a bb on ebay probably. Look for used too. You might need a new bb also, but I'd look for something used on ebay.

I'm not 100% sure about the FD or RD issues since I've never tried to make the switch.

You can still find NOS 105 and Ultegra 9sp double cranks for less than $80.

You can always scour eBay. You're going to have to find a new bottom-bracket as well... triple BB's have much longer spindles that double BB's won't fit onto.

I imagine you don't need a new front derailleur, but it sure wouldn't hurt. I've never tried setting up a triple FD to work on a double.
