ultegra upgrade?
My recently aquired Scott CR1 team's 105 shifters have been found to be faulty by my mechanic during the 100 mile tune up. The thing is, now I have the option to upgrade to the Ultegra shifters for $75. Note however, that all of my other components would still be 105's. Would upgrading the 105 shifters to the Ultegra shifters be worth it? Or are my $75 spent better elsewhere? Thanks guys.

I'd say do it; the Ultegra shifters are just more comfy.

75 bucks ain't much, so do it!
Although, life's too short, so go for the bling: Dura-Ace shifters are $281 (plus postage) on Pro Bike kit

Are you comparing 10-speed Ultegra to 9-speed 105? Because the 10-speed 105 shifters have a very similar ergonomic design to its upper-end siblings.
joefosho: Is your current setup 9- or 10-speed? If you have 10-speed currently, I don't think you'll notice much of a difference upgrading the shifters. However, if going from 9- to 10-speed, I think it'd be worth it (but don't forget to factor in the cost of a new 10-speed cassette and chain).

No, I'm comparing 105 10 to 10 Ultegra 10. To me (remember, this is subjective) the 105 hoods feel a bit clunkier.
Regarding 105 9 speed, why would the mechanic be offering an upgrade to incompatible Ultegra brifters? OP is talking about 105 10.

do the 105s allow you to sweep from 1st to 5th? I have a friend with Soras and the gears seem to only move one stop at a time. With my 9sp ultegras, I can move 4 steps with one sweep. I hope that makes sense??

Do you have the option of upgrading to Ultegra Ice? Those are nice. Either way I say you should upgrade. $75 is quite cheap for upgrading to brand new Ultegra shifters from 105.

Turns out I picked neither the Ultegra nor the 105s...the mechanic convinced me to upgrade to brand new DA for $150! Seemed like a good enough deal to me.
