Road Cycling “It is by riding a bicycle that you learn the contours of a country best, since you have to sweat up the hills and coast down them. Thus you remember them as they actually are, while in a motor car only a high hill impresses you, and you have no such accurate remembrance of country you have driven through as you gain by riding a bicycle.” -- Ernest Hemingway

Liberals are dumb is the theme.

no generalizing going on there...

not sure what any of this has to do about a rookie cop with a bad temper, and a critical mass rider...

Oooooo...I think I have that album. That came out under "The Man" label didn't it?

Just sounded like a bunch of 20-somethings screaming about some injustice. What ever happened to them? Oh yeah, they all grew up, got jobs and had kids.

That's too bad. I think they had a real future in the Road Cycling genre....wait...that doesn't make any sense! That would be Politics and Religion genre....wait....what forum is this again?

Hmmmmm....

Sorry...had to fix that for you. Yes they are the same, but it's like referring to beer in terms of gallons instead of pints.....when it's not the weekend of course.

I'm sorry, I don't seem to understand, are you implying that with maturity comes a disregard for human rights? I truly don't see the logic in that, perhaps you should research some civil rights leaders who have fought for peoples rights and are quite a bit older and more mature than yourself- Start here- Mohandas Karamchand Gandhi.

Perhaps some research will lead to your maturation as well.

- Seriously.....

The fire of idealism is often extinguished by the river of experience.

Sounds like something hippies could understand.

So, you are for the abolition of all law, as laws in and of themselves come from ideals? Correct?

I'm out for this thread. I've been asked to tone it down by a BF moderator who did so in a very decent way. I agree with him. This thread has gotten out of hand. If there were any chance for reaching middle ground, it likely would have been achieved by now.

Cheers.

It's always fun to be cynical about 'things never changing' when you're the one benefiting from inequity. If your idealism is extinguished, it's because you got lazy. That's nobody's fault but your own.

PS, I'm getting more liberal as I'm getting older, more financially secure, and more educated about the practical results of conservative ideology. Do you really wish for the return of the libertarian 'robber baron' era with no EPA, no FDA, no middle class, no healthcare, and no hope for anyone except a few oligarchs? Because that's what pure conservatism wants.

I think he just wants to be able to body slam other cyclists to the curb. With impunity. At least that's been his argument.

In a way....yes. When I was young and dumb I wanted to save the environment. Now I make industrial grade internal combustion engine components and am actively engaged in talks about how we are going to have to find ways to supply locally in China and India because there is no EPA there.

I make over 250,000 of one type of component every year. Only one goes on any engine. That means there are 250,000 engines that are made with what I produce and I am just a drop in the bucket - small time.

When faced with challenges this big you either decide to dedicate your life to fighting the cause or you "sell out" and join "the man" hoping to make your change when and where you can.

And here, for your delight:

https://theerant.yuku.com/topic/7789/...g-cyclist.html

are what fellow cops and cop-lovers are saying to each other on their forums. It's a big thumbs-up for Officer Pagano, standing up for the rights of cops everywhere.

This pig don't even live in my city. He lives an hour and a half east, and lives with his parents (or father, at least).

I've been "delayed" by Critical Mass several times while I'm driving. It amounts to waiting one or two extra traffic light signals. For this big whoops, the City has declared war. That lets you know exactly which side of the "cyclists are traffic too" issue they're on.

No...I didn't give up...I just realized that unchecked idealism is fruitless. Real lasting change is incremental, logical, and supported by natural, and economic principals....if it is to ever succeed.

So let's start with some small incremental change. Can we finally agree that this thread really does not belong in Road Cycling anymore. It hasn't resembled anything even close to road cycling in a long time and really smacks of an attempt from the self-appointed intelligista to incite flame wars from the egocentric masses of roadies.

Let's make that small change to improve the world by moving this thread to a forum full of people who will appreciate the true ethical discussions that it inspires.

Go tip your barristas and snap to show your approval.

Well....sounds like a good time to start with some intensified advocacy.....wait....that would mean this needs to be in the advocacy forum. Nevermind....

Years of training at the taxpayers expense, now that rookie cop is no longer a cop. (actually he is on desk duty turned in his gun)
but he is a coward! Pat Pogan you are a coward and a liar, shame.

Total Sucker punch if I ever saw one. Thank God someone caught that on film. Now the cyclist will probably sue the city costing more money when we could be spending that money on posters that say : "If you see something say something"
Yeah, I saw something I saw a cop assault a kid on a bike!

You people who take this cops side are idiots! I am no fan of Critical Mass Rides But still, this is beyond the pale....
and damn hell this belongs on the road forum. I ride on the same roads as that kid on the bike. In most non-riders eyes YOU ARE that kid on the bike.

This hostility towards cyclists seems to be an ongoing situation in NYC,not just Critical Mass.
Refer back to the thread on cycle speed limits through Central Park, absurd cycling tickets, etc.
Great job on promoting tourism in this city.Next time I need a ride from hell in a filthy cab during the summer, your the place.

I absolutely hate going to sites like that. There is blatant stereotyping, and religious prejudice being displayed by those posters. Those are the people that are supposed to be protecting the law? I try to avoid sites like that because it leaves me so dumb founded that people can be so ignorant and full of hate.

Bingo...you said it....you don't understand. For you it's ok to interfer with others rights to the point that they get pissed but no way should they violate yours. This is rich...comparing Gandhi to a critical mass ride.

"unchecked idealism," that's a new one. was MLK too idealistic? should he have waited for "the market" to make the right choice in regards to civil rights? no. giving up on idealism is giving up - call it "realistic" but it's the same thought process that turns people republican as they get older/richer, and it's sad. i mean you sound like a nice guy and all, but what's wrong with idealism again?

and if the "what car do you have" threads can stay in the road forum, why can't this one? or how about the "post your other obsession thread" - those by definition have nothing to do with cycling, much less road cycling. nobody seems to mind those threads (besides me), but all of a sudden a tough issue comes up, and people start whining this thread isn't in the right place. bs.
