Road Cycling “It is by riding a bicycle that you learn the contours of a country best, since you have to sweat up the hills and coast down them. Thus you remember them as they actually are, while in a motor car only a high hill impresses you, and you have no such accurate remembrance of country you have driven through as you gain by riding a bicycle.” -- Ernest Hemingway

Conversion question!

So I want to convert my Bianchi Pista fixed gear bike into a road bike. What parts do I need or do you guys suggest? Is this a project I can do myself? Do they make anodized derailleurs?

Anyone have any experience with this kind of thing? Any help would be appreciated!

I don't know if it would be possible to attach a rear derailleur to track ends. Perhaps there's some sort of derailleur hanger available for this kind of conversion but I've never seen one.

Then there's the question of running cables on a bike with no cable bosses. Again, perhaps there's some sort of aftermarket widget available, but I've never seen one.

Maybe an internal hub?

Bianchi Pistas don't have rear dérailleur hangers.

No hangers = no dérailleurs = no gears.

With the work needed and parts it would cost you about as much as an entry level roadie. Get one of these for 800$

Ahem...

You will however, need a new groupset and a new rear wheel.

It would be kinda neat to convert into a Campy setup with a single 10s Record downtube shifter for the rear only.

No hanger, no downtube bosses, no cable guides. Don't do it. Just buy an old road frame.

And you'd need a vintage clamp on downtube shifter band. 15GPB at Campyoldy.com. http://www.campyoldy.co.uk/stocklist.htm

There was mention in a FG/SS thread to troll the road forum.

Here it is.

Gee golly! Not troll. Stir up trouble is the word I used. In any case I just expanded my bike shop knowledge with a new part to add a hanger to a bike that doesnt have one! Thanks guys! You're swell!

Yeah, I'm not sure how you would do it without downtube cable stops. Sell the Pista (I haven't checked the Pista-Dex lately, but you should be able to get a decent price) and buy a proper road frame.

Do you know how many super deep v-neck shirts he could buy if he sold his Pista...omg, it's almost overwhelming. He might even have enough money left over to buy some PBR!

Wow! This post was so funny that I accidentally mis-cut the pair of Dickies I am making into bike knickers. Oh well, I guess that's actually an enhancement.

I already sold one of my concepts. I think I'll use the $300 I made in the resale to buy some booze and drink away my sorrows. You win today roadies!
