Road Cycling “It is by riding a bicycle that you learn the contours of a country best, since you have to sweat up the hills and coast down them. Thus you remember them as they actually are, while in a motor car only a high hill impresses you, and you have no such accurate remembrance of country you have driven through as you gain by riding a bicycle.” -- Ernest Hemingway

Need New Shoes

I am trying to decide between the Specialized pro road and the Sidi Genius 5. For a few more bucks($60) I could go with the Specialized S-works with the Boa closure or the Sidi Genius 5.5 Carbon. Been reading a lot of threads on all of them, which would you guys recommend?

Which ever ones fit you the best. It's been said before, and it still holds true. I'm still trying to find a pair of shoes that my feet can stand past 40/50 miles, and I really don't care what color, make, model, weight, or even insoles they have. All that matters is that I can finish the ride without foot pain taking the fun out of it.

i've got the genius 5.5 ht carbons that i got on ebay brand new for $150. i gotta say, they're great shoes. fairly light, stiff, extremely comfortable and broke in very quickly. i'm biased though, since i've never owned specialized shoes.

the genius 5's are great shoes. i love my cf frame, but actually prefer the comfort of the genius 5 to the cf soled 5.5's

I picked up the Shimano R085 road shoes for free with my REI dividend and absolutely love them, great thing about them is they look just like the higher end models. $99 bucks, they're worth a shot!

Damn right. Best cycling shoe I've ever owned. By a looooooooooooooooooooooooooooong shot. Freakin' amazing. My two pairs of Sidi's are junk in comparison.

The Shimano R300 has a thermo fit moldable upper, they should suit a wider range of foot shapes than the Sidi in most instances

If they fit your feet I'd recommend either the Sidi's or the S-Works Boa's. I have Sidi road and MTB shoes and S-Works road and love them all. My only gripe about Sidi is that the 6.6 and Ergo 2 don't come with Mega sizes. If they did I would have gotten the Ergo 2's and wouldn't have needed the Boa's.

yeah, i had to return some 5.5 HTs as they were just too darn narrow. it is odd that they dont carry mega sizes in the higer end Sidis. later.

Shimano 300's are available in widths, BTW. Between that and the Easy-bake stuff, they should fit a huge number of people very well.

True, but it doesn't guarantee anything. I suppose if you had no choice but to order online, R300 would be the safest bet to start with. I'm actually thinking about that because I tried on every shoe in stock in two stores and the ones I ended up with (Sidi btw) still kill my big toe after about 4 hours.

I've got the R220s (prefer look of them to R300s) and when you try them on they feel nice. But once you actually do moulding process they are best shoes i've ridden. They come in normal and wide versions, so combine that with heat moulding they 'should' fit most people. I did consider Specialized Boa ones though. nice shoe

Anybody riding the Shimano moldable ones ride Sidi's in the past that had problems with their big toes?? That's my number complaint with me Sidi's. The curve of the sole causes a mjor pressure point on the outside edge/front of my big toes.

I was hoping that the Shimano soles would either have more space there or the molding process would create more space...

That's exactly where my pain is, but I was hoping it was just because my feet growing put extra pressure on it and that going up a size would solve it. Now you have me concerned and I'd like to know the answer as well.

Anyone think taking it to a shoe repair place and having them stretch the toe box would alleviate some of the pressure?

I've tried on about 50 different shoes. None fit well. The Sidi's I'm using now cause numb toes.

Totally given up on off-the-shelf shoes. I'm ordering custom shoes from D2 next month!

I went from Sidi Megas in 47. Had some issue, but still thought they were good shoes. Went to the R300 wide in a 46.5. Stiffer, better ventilated, and a massive toe box. The caveat: they seem to require a super thin sock. Somehow it lets the shoe do it's marvelous job. I would however, strongly encourage a shop fitting.
