Road Cycling “It is by riding a bicycle that you learn the contours of a country best, since you have to sweat up the hills and coast down them. Thus you remember them as they actually are, while in a motor car only a high hill impresses you, and you have no such accurate remembrance of country you have driven through as you gain by riding a bicycle.” -- Ernest Hemingway

Ultegra or Ultegra SL?

I have decided my choice on ultegra or ultegra sl groupset. I have read on webs about the different in weight, color and some materials on the cranks that made the difference. However, i prefer a hands on experience than the rather "gimmick" used on the webpage. So, anyone used them long enough to test its durability, stiffness and any other differences. Main concern would be the different material used on the crankset. The 100g is not a concern to me.
Thanks

I have both. I can't tell the difference in shifting.

The SL is getting scratched and scuffed up over time although not as bad as I had initially feared. I do not baby my bikes but the reality is the drive train doesn't get knocked around that much.

I had Ultegra first and bought the SL for the compact crank and the colour.

If weight is not a concern pick the one with the color and price you like. With the millions of Ultegra equipped bikes out there I think Shimano has proved the quality of their product. You don't really think you're going to snap or break a Ultegra crankarm do you?

Yea, I know that. But what is the difference in that steel spindle of ultegra sl compared to ultegra? I am rather a careless rider and sometimes just ride past potholes so i am looking at durability when i purchase stuff. Color isn't much of a matter as i think both will fits my Ti bike. Most importantly is comparing of both groupos durability and stiffness. I wonder why the change of the spindle material in the SL?

Drivetrain, maybe. I just dumped my brand new ride with SL on it and took all of the finish off the front tops of the STI housing and the side of one of the levers. Not fixable, and looks like hell, and the levers are the most expensive single component. Flat aluminum finish would not be nearly as noticeable with this kind of damage. Was pretty when new, but doesn't wear well. I'm betting Shimano drops this marketing gimmick shortly.

that's probably because you're not riding it enough.
