Centaur is more the equal of Ultegra, Veloce is similar to 105. Both are fine groups, especially the new 10spd 2004 Veloce groupo.
I'm a Campy guy who works at a bike shop that only sells Shimano bikes, so my new road bike is Ultegra equipped because of the good deal I got on it. I would rather be riding the new 04 10spd Veloce group though if I had the choice and the funds for it. Go with whichever lever style you prefer.

yikes, which is better Scotts toilet paper or Charmin? I like Scotts, and I also prefer Campy over Shimano, but then again I prefer Suntour Superbe over those, so who am I too say? One thing you might want to do is go to your LBS and ask to see the replacement parts list for both and see who has the most replacement parts available, the importance of this is whether or not you have to replace the entire part or just a small part of it.

The reason I'm asking is I can get a bianchi veloce for 800 dollars or the vigorrille full ultegra for 1200 or the brand new vig for 1500. the veloce is 2003 model. also looking at a 2003 lemond buenos aries for 1200. Can't make up my mind.
Thanks for any help

sorry guys this isn't about which is better campy vs. shimano. Veloce is way farther down on the campy line than ultegra is on the shimano line. Veloce is heavy. Really heavy. Ultegra is way better designed and is lighter and just slightly under in Dura ace in performance. Veloce is under Record, Chorus, and Centaur. I have both Record and Chorus on my bikes and they kick ass but Veloce is not quite there. Ultegra is a lot closer in performance. Trust me I have used ultegra too..

I agree Shinomaster, Ultegra is better $400 better I'm not sure if you are purely looking at the price. You could ask the shop about upgrading the components at time of purchase maybe they will work something out with you to take it up to Centaur then we are talking closer match. I personaly prefer Campy but not everyone does go ride both bikes see what style you prefer.

Well said ezyrider03. I ride all the time with people who have a lot of opinions about wheels, frames, components, etc. A lot of them are very critical of things they have no right to be critical of. At the level most of us ride it is not the equipment. I am no faster on my Chorus equiped Cannondale than my 105 equipped Orbea.
To Crowtree - get the one that makes you smile most as you ride it. Veloce would serve you well as would the Ultegra. Having ridden both - I prefer Campy shifting and braking, but that's me. I am led to believe that Campy lasts longer in general, but you will probably not wear either out unless you are being overly hard on your equipment.

Sorry Shinomaster but you're mistaken thinking Veloce is really heavy compared with Ultegra. Checked both Campag and Shimano's official sites and i've calculated there's surprisingly only half a pound weight difference between the two groups. Unless you're a racing cyclist i wouldn't worry too much about such a small weight difference. Personally i find it better to mix and match from two adjacent groups. This way i've the best of both worlds. Value for money and performance where it really matters. Then i use the money saved to reduce rotational weight.
Ultegra : 6.76 lbs
Veloce : 7.28 lbs
