Road Cycling “It is by riding a bicycle that you learn the contours of a country best, since you have to sweat up the hills and coast down them. Thus you remember them as they actually are, while in a motor car only a high hill impresses you, and you have no such accurate remembrance of country you have driven through as you gain by riding a bicycle.” -- Ernest Hemingway

Help! My rear derailleur broke today and now I'm bikeless :(

So I'm riding back from the gym today and I think it kissed the curb somehow and now I have no rear derailleur. It essentially snapped in half

My bike is a 2006 caad8 r700 specs:https://www.cannondale.com/bikes/06/C...del-6RR7D.html
It's stock except for a shimano ultegra crankset that I replaced maybe 4-500 miles ago. At the time I had it done at a bike shop but since then have become a bit more handy with adjustments etc. and would prefer to fix this myself if possible (I have the tools).

So I guess I'm asking a couple different things...

Is this something I could do myself? I'm pretty confident I could provided a guide and some patience, plus the experience would be nice...

What rear derailleur should I buy to replace it? Just another shimano ultegra? Most seem to be 10spd, will that be a problem? I'm pretty sure my crank was labeled 10spd so I wasn't sure if I could get away with a 10spd one...

Finally, are there other associated parts that'll need replacing along with the derailleur? I understand these things wear together so will I need a new set of rear cogs, chain, or even complete drive train?

Ideally I want to remedy this as quickly as possible as I ride around everywhere. I love my roadie and need to get her up and running again soon

I figure I'll bring it by my lbs and see what they say, but wanted to get BF's opinion on it, plus I'd rather do it myself to save money and not have to wait for the lbs to actually do it.

Help......

looks like the specs on this ultegra would actually work... What's the general consensus on using that model? Is there a less expensive alternative that wouldn't sacrifice performance?

Putting on a derailleur is relatively easy. You just place it on the highest cog, and then tighten the cable as much as you can. The shifter then takes care of the rest. And wouldn't the shifter be more important in determining the speed, and not the deraileur itself? I could be wrong on this one.

Or you could use this opportunity to turn it into a single speed and not worry about dropped chains or derailleur breakdowns!

Personally, I'd get an Ultegra 6600 rear deraileur. This model is 9 speed and 10 speed compatible. Just a straight drop in replacement. Just adjust the B screw and the High and Low stops and you should be up and running.

I just upgraded my 06 Cannondale Road Warrior from a 9 speed triple to a 10 speed double and swapped out the flat bar controllers for 10 speed Shimano barcons (Dura Ace SL-BS78); a Shimano 105 crank and bottom bracket (FC-5502 and BB5500); Shimano Ultegra FD6600 front and RD6600 rear derailers. Currently, I'm running the barcons in a Newk drop/bar end on my flat bar and hope to have my Paul Thumbies soon to go back to a back to a regular flat bar sans bar ends.

Follow the instructions and you should be up and running. Remember, if you stay 9 speed, you have nothing else to change. Go to 10 speed and you need to change your Right (rear) STI shifter and your front deraileur and chain.

I'm pleased to hear that this is something I should be able to do myself It seemed pretty straight forward initially and what little searching I've done thus far has supported that.

Main question now is what model to go with? Is the ultegra I posted the safe bet? I am perfectly content w/the 9 speed so I don't want to make any major changes, I'd actually just like it fixed as quickly and as inexpensively as possible. What are some recommendations for replacement derailleurs that will retain at least factory performance and not break the bank?

Coincidentally, that's exactly the model I posted initially Anyone else recommend this model? I'm ready to pull the trigger tonight so she'll hopefully be up and running by this weekend...

Personally, I would go with Ultegra, but 105 would work, if you can find one. Seems to me (and its a WAG) that there will be a new 105 groupo introduced as its a little difficult to find 105 parts. That is one of the reasons I went with an Ultegra RD6600.

I just ordered the ultegra 6600, seemed to be the closest to what's on there now, thanks for the advice

Changing the derailleur isn't hard and almost any contemporary Shimano one should work well enough. Getting it adjusted correctly will take some time for a n00b, though. You may be in for some extra frustration if you bent the hanger, though.
