Road Cycling “It is by riding a bicycle that you learn the contours of a country best, since you have to sweat up the hills and coast down them. Thus you remember them as they actually are, while in a motor car only a high hill impresses you, and you have no such accurate remembrance of country you have driven through as you gain by riding a bicycle.” -- Ernest Hemingway

To carbon or not to carbon...

So I'm new. New here and only seriously cycling for the past two years. I think I'll start doing some road racing next year. I'll try some cross races this fall. Most of the guys I ride with have POS bike like mine.

Right now I've got a 2006 Scattante R660 / ultegra. I put better wheels, carbon crank and some sheshe carbon bars on it. It sits at about 18 1/2 LBS.

One of my riding buddies has a Pinarello Prince and I'd kill him and take his bike but he is too f-ng small. (I need about 57cm and he is at 52cm) So stealing his Prince is not an option.

I missed the group buy on the Pedal Force. I looked at a Trek 6.? and a Parlee Z4. Looked at the Pedal Force. I'd rather spend about 3K but I'd go to 5K if I have to. I really like the idea of loosing some bike weight and having a better ride. I ride lots of hills here in Portland, OR.

I'm torn between getting a sexy chunk of carbon and waiting till next year to up my ride.

Wait...what is wrong with your current bike that makes you want a new one? Unless you are racing, it seems rather fruitless to purchase a carbon frame. That is, unless you enjoy consuming for consuming's sake. I know I do.

If you're new here, you're not allowed to even potentially insult other BFers until your third post.

If you're new, you somehow missed the directive that states you can't even potentially insult a BFers choice of bike until your third post.

If you can afford it, why the heck not? I say go for it.

Dang it, I missed by one post. I guess I'll apologize for any offense, although none was intended. Now this is my third post so I'm good to go now, right? I can be as offensive as I want now.

I woke up this morning and I had the bight idea to wait till fall or spring when this years bling bling will be on sale to make way for next years bike porn. I think Mr. Zappa, the first reply- (Joes Garage all the way!), was right. There is nothing wrong with my bike but I do enjoy consuming. Other than envying my buddy's prince there is no "need" here. But I know this about myself: once I start to jones for something I usually find a way to justify it.

That PS2 looks really sexy.
