Road Cycling “It is by riding a bicycle that you learn the contours of a country best, since you have to sweat up the hills and coast down them. Thus you remember them as they actually are, while in a motor car only a high hill impresses you, and you have no such accurate remembrance of country you have driven through as you gain by riding a bicycle.” -- Ernest Hemingway

Bontrager Race Lites aren't bad. Might could do better but they are plenty durable.

Ritchey Tom Slicks... AMAZING tires... I just got a pair and MAN are they nice. They appear to be VERY durable and look like they will handle anything I can throw at them.

I'm using the Bontragers in 32 for durabilty. Heavy as sin but handle well and quite tough.

If you want something relatively fast-ish, the Avocets are really nice, and they wear ok but not as tough as the Bonty's.

Can't seem to find the bontragers online. Where do you find them?

Forte from Performance makes a 35c slick. $8 on sale. I beat the sh*t out of these on my commuter.

Anybody able to compare handling/durability of the Forte vs Schwalbe, Bontrager, or Hutchison Top Slick?

+1 to Schwalbe Marathons. They're tough and pretty light.

Bontrager doesn't sell any of their stuff online, only at LBS. But they do sell a bunch of stuff now at the Trek online store, but I don't see the race lites available in anything bigger than 28mm.

Think I'll order the Forte's
-cheapest
-heaviest (trying to slow my bike down for training)
-slick in center of contact patch for road so smooth
-slightly depressed tread on sides for a little extra traction in commuting (ice patches)

...unless someone convinces me otherwise

I really like the Panaracer Urban Max tyre. It's a good tyre. You can get them from Performance for 15$ or so. Schwalbe Marathons are a classic touring type tyre. They are tough and ride well. They do ok off road too. But they do have stiff sidewalls that can make fitting tough.

No type of of tread will help you on ice. Physics geeks may disagree but I don't think tread helps on dry asphalt either, that's why I ride slicks to begin with. I want as much contact with the road surface as possible like racing car tires.

Maxxis Overdrive, not a true slick but comfortable and yet to flat on them in inner city houston streets, they are 38.

I like my Vittoria Cross XN in 32c. Rolls fast at 80psi and is off road worth at 45psi.
