Road Cycling “It is by riding a bicycle that you learn the contours of a country best, since you have to sweat up the hills and coast down them. Thus you remember them as they actually are, while in a motor car only a high hill impresses you, and you have no such accurate remembrance of country you have driven through as you gain by riding a bicycle.” -- Ernest Hemingway

We've added Mississippi and Louisiana to the list now to make it 30 US states. If all goes well, we'll get some more Louisiana riding in over the next few days, then pick up some western states after that.

We based ourselves in Hualien and did day rides from there. That was good, but as we headed south along the coast on the last day, we wished we had several more days ... the highway south of Hualien is beautiful!!

I've ridden in Ontario (near Waterloo), France (near Grenoble), Italy (I rode from Grenoble to Turin across the Alps), Switzerland (three day tour from Lausanne to Saint-Gallen) and Belgium. Technically I was in Belgium/the Netherlands/Germany all at the same time a few weeks ago but I wouldn't really say I've ridden much in the Netherlands/Germany.

We did return to Australia mid-January, and added Western Australia to my cycling list. There was some beautiful cycling in that area.

Over the last year we've been exploring Tasmania ... Rowan is, of course, quite familiar with Tasmania, and I've been here before too, but there are lots of places to visit and re-visit.

Besides the states and countries that I posted way back earlier in the thread, we're adding Italy, Serbia and Croatia this year.

Yes, it is. I think most of my riding will be in this second half of the year.

Pennsylvania

I seem to work a lot more than you folks, LOL. I don't know how I could ride elsewhere than at home.

Holiday time!

And long weekends about once a month to travel around your current state/province or the neighbouring ones.

Plus moving a lot.

Pennsylvania is surrounded by states ... you've got a whole collection of them off to the right. You could probably cover 10-12 of them in couple weeks of holidays.

We were flying home from Italy back to Travis AFB in CA on Christmas eve. My buddy and I had our bikes, and we had no cargo on the plane. The cargo area is 121 feet long and 19 feet wide. I know, pictures or it didn't happen!

If I have to explain, I probably shouldn’t post, but it’s a quote from Steve King, my congressional rep (Rep, IA). Do the research, but he’s regularly featured In Huffington Post for outlandish statements. The reference is to a remark he made equating undocumented teens to smugglers crossing the border.

I’ve ridden in 17 states, most in upper Midwest or some way contiguous. My claim to uniqueness is cycling in Tibet, Nepal, and Thailand. I took a catered tour from Lhasa, Tibet to Khatmandu, Nepal. We started at about 12000 feet, most of the tour was 13000 feet +/, we hit 16000 at least 6 times; the highest was 17100 feet. We visited the base camp on the north face of Qomolongmo (Mt Everest). I was sick that day, so it’s a stretch to say that I’ve ridden on Everest which was still some distance to the peak, but coulda, shoulda. Had a beer at the bar / restaurant there. Not the "Restaurant at the End of the Universe", but the "Bar on the Roof of the World" works for me.

I’ve spent a total of about 9 months in Nepal including a 2 week solo tour that included Chitwan National park (a UNESCO world heritage site with tigers, rhinos, and gharial crocs) and Lumbini (birthplace of Siddartha Gautama aka the Bhudda). Know my way around KTM and surrounds and mastered the crazy traffic. Have also cycled several places in northern Thailand, particularly around Chiang Mai.

My experience in Tibet warped my thinking, but I always cringe a little when I hear the tour is entering the “high” mountains, or how thin the air is at 7000 feet when I felt supercharged after I got back to 10000 coming down off the Himalaya massif.

The bucket list thread made me think of riding along the Danube to the Black Sea, but wondered whether such river cycling routes were as practical or scenic as I imagined. Then this. What do you know?

By the way, where have I ridden? As a kid and student, in Texas (very casually), then back in the winter of '98 I was working outside Venice, Italy, and we had Pinarello bikes for riding around the shipyard - not the racing bikes everyone knows, of course. But since I've become what they call an "avid cyclist," so far I've only ridden in New York and New Jersey.
