Road Cycling “It is by riding a bicycle that you learn the contours of a country best, since you have to sweat up the hills and coast down them. Thus you remember them as they actually are, while in a motor car only a high hill impresses you, and you have no such accurate remembrance of country you have driven through as you gain by riding a bicycle.” -- Ernest Hemingway

Where are you planning to ride this weekend?

Where are you planning to ride this weekend?

I'm debating ... do I do a long local ride here in the foothills ... or do I head into the mountains again to ride there?

There are pros and cons to each.

If I ride locally, I don't have to get up as early on Saturday and I don't use fuel to get anywhere, but I've ridden all the local roads ... many times.

If I ride in the mountains, I will have to be up early and will have to drive, but the Rocky Mountains are a beautiful place to ride.

Saturday morning going to do a ride of about 4 hours with a friend from my LBS. Sunday morning is looking like a BF laid back ride of about 50 miles, but I'm thinking of 20 guerrilla miles on each end

40 miles with about 4k feet of climbing...should take somewhere between 2 and 3 hours...proably closer to the 3 hour range with stops. First time doing this ride so I hope that I can walk the next day.

there's a 300k brevet on saturday i want to do, but it's 70-75 miles away, a little too far for me to ride to..

it goes from the olympia area all the way down to mt. st. helens, and back! instead i'll do some local climbs. i might even build up my fixie again and give it a spin.

the forecast is calling for perfect riding weather!

I'm back on the bike but I'm not pushing myself past 30 miles, I'm thinking of trying to head out to Palos Verdes this weekend and do the Lunada Loop it's 30 mile with 5000ish feet of climbing.

Its raining and cold all weekend here on the other side of the world. I might try and get out for a bit on Saturday. Sunday I'm paid and signed up to do a 53km TT.... ouchie. I've only ever done two TTs before and they were both 17km only, so this should be interesting. I'm prepared to suck.

Mountains -- the riding season is shorter there. Enjoy it while you can.

Probably just a casual 30-40 mile coastal ride from Point Loma to Del Mar or Encinitas.

I think I'll throw the bike on the rack and drive out this time to the W&OD for a 30-40 mile ride. Should be interesting to see what I can manage starting out right on the trail instead of dealing with all the local streets and crossings I have to navigate when I ride from my house to the trail.

With the price of gas and the state of my finances, I no longer put the bike in the car and drive somewhere to ride. All rides begin and end at my house. Having said that, I'm going to ride the 32 mile route I didn't get to finish last week due to 2 flats 5 miles from home (hated having my daughter have to come get me). 3000 ft of climbing, the hardest climbs at mile 29-30. New patch kit and tube in the seat wedge, new tire/tube on the rear.

I'm planning on riding in Kananaskis country, probably around the Bragg Creek area. Last weekend was a trip to Montana so I'm trying to keep it a little more local.

I always consider it treasoneous to put my bike on the bike rack and drive to the starting point. Some times you have to. How about split the difference. Get up a little later and drive part way. Then, increase your bike ride's distance.

Haven't decided between a 45 mile Saturday ride with the San Diego Bicycle Club or the 60 mile training ride for the upcoming Tour de Poway Century with Trek SD. Either way, I'm riding somewhere!

I get every other Friday off, and tomorrow is one of the off-Fridays. I'm hoping to ride a century on the roads around my house (souther NH). But, the weather is iffy. I'll probably start the ride, loop back home after 50 miles, wait out some thunderstorms, and then do another 50 mile loop.

Saturday morning do the weekly LBS Tour de Donut ride. Sunday is a solo ride to where ever - maybe around one of the local lakes.

Yeah it really is counterproductive to the whole "thing"... as a rule I try an make all my rides start and end at home. The worst part of my ride right now is the first and last 2 miles, because it's all on cracked and rutted up walking paths on the side of the road to get to the main MUP. I'll probably do what you suggested and drive part of the way so I can at least be on something nice to ride on and then extend my riding time.

One day I'll HTFU and get the confidence to take the lane... but with the way people drive around here... F that!

"Beach to Creek" A regular local club ride around DC that they do about once a month but I haven't been able to get to this year. Official ride is only 26 miles, so I'll start in VA and go for 50ish for the day. Thinking about visiting the 20th and R ghost bike after, and maybe do a stop at the National building Museum before the Saarinen show leaves.
This ride will also be partly work. I'll be riding by a couple of my completed projects, so I'll take my camera to get pictures if the light is right. Also need to do a site visit for a new house we have in for permit to check something on the adjoining lot.

Doing an organized 65 mile ride on Sunday. Add 20 to that for the ride to and from. This is the first weekend ride all season that I WILL NOT have to drive to.

I should add this to the 'cycling sins' thread, but I will often drive as far as I'll ride on my organized weekend rides (50 - 60+ miles).

I'm planning on riding around Lake Skaneateles in NY this Sunday. That's about 30 miles from what I hear here. Anybody care to join me?
