Road Cycling “It is by riding a bicycle that you learn the contours of a country best, since you have to sweat up the hills and coast down them. Thus you remember them as they actually are, while in a motor car only a high hill impresses you, and you have no such accurate remembrance of country you have driven through as you gain by riding a bicycle.” -- Ernest Hemingway

I knew he Armstrong wouldn't win because I kept dropping him on training rides when I was getting him ready for the race. He's soft. I would have made it in 6 hours flat, but I had to work so I couldn't race.

Was there some kind of standard bike each rider was required to purchase?

They are whatever the riders want.

I have seen frames from Trek, Gary Fisher, Santa Cruz, Giant, Cannondale, BMC and many others in the pictures so far.

Forks are generally Rock Shox (SID) and Fox Racing Shox (32-RLC or Float 100 models). There are a few riders on DT Swiss, Spinner and Marzocchi.

Lots of SS and 29ers probably too, as there were at the Leadville 50 a few weeks ago. No doubt a few rigid 29er SS too

Nice! This one says it all to me. If Lance Armstrong has to get off and walk up a hill, what kind of an ungodly climb is that??

One where it's faster to run up than to ride.

It looks as if the bottle is under the frame? Is that how mountain bikers mount their water?

I wouldn't be surprised. They don't really have much of a seat tube.

Thought the same thing!

Oh well, that's the **** you get for free or little to nothing.

To those who don't know, I'm a sports photographer/photo editor...just so it doesn't sound like I'm talking from the wrong end, haha!

Back on topic, cool to see Lance riding a race on a mountain bike. I'm sure he's done some before, but first I've personally seen.

It's MTB racing. It doesn't take much of a climb to force you to walk in the dirt. Here's a clue: look at the surface they're on. It's more about traction and the way the surface and the rocks/roots impede your forward progress than the grade or the distance. It is often impossible to ride or faster to walk over such terrain in the dirt, on climbs that have grades that would be easy to clear on paved road and a racing bicycle.

Those Mtn bikers are nuts. You can see the loose gravel on that hill - ie. no traction. You try to stand up to hammer and there is no weight on the back tire and you stall out. They are a different breed.

What, they don't have cars with spare bikes on the roof to support the riders?

How primitive.
