2009 Roubaix Pro with SRAM or Shimano - Which bike?
The 2009 Specialized Roubaix Pro SL bikes are now becoming available. Below are the links to the 2 models. They both have the same frames. The only difference is the component set: Shimano vs. SRAM (both are a mix - Red & Force and Dura Ace & Ultegra). The SRAM bike should be available in a week or so, while the DA bike may be a few months, but time is not an issue. Also the DA bike is a few dollars more
Which bike and why ????

SRAM... performance for price, it's a lot lighter, and I do believe SRAM shifters are rebuildable (don't quote me on this).

Why does everyone keep quoting rebuildability as a feature? I've got over 5K miles on ultegra components and they still feel like new. I'm sure I'll just get upgrade-itis before I ever would need to rebuild/replace any of these components.

SRAM ~ Shimano ~ Campy = they shift. The shifting speed* and tactile feeling is the perceptive difference.
*Maybe... like Record vs. Alivio

You should ride both SRAM and shimano (if you haven't already.) I think it's largely a matter of personal preference, tho if the SRAM one is cheaper and available sooner, that sounds significant to me.
Personally, I like SRAM a lot more than shimano.

Unfortunately, The Dura Ace 7900 is NOT available to test ride - (that is part of the dilemma)

That's true. Don't know if I'd want to be the guinea pig for the first year of a new generation. Tho I guess I did it with SRAM and didn't have any problems.

I love my SRAM, tho I did end up replacing the Force shifters with red. The FD shifting requires much less throw. for '09, the force shifters are supposed to get that improvement from red.
When I first installed the SRAM stuff, I used a SRAM PC-1090R chain. And it was noisy. I've since switched to a KMC, and it's nice and quiet.
The shifts are faster than shimano. They're also more abrupt. Shimano to me feels soft and smooth. You can barely feel the shift at all. SRAM feel quick and sure (and it does make a more noticeable "clunk" when shifting to a smaller cog.) I prefer the SRAM shifting.
