Pcad's Dilemma
It's well established that I suck at this sport. So we all know that. Here's my problem:
I can't sprint
I'm a very mediocre TT guy at best
I'm a mediocre climber
So what can I do as a competitive cyclist? Not much of course, but IF I get really, really, really skinny (that's almost impossible for me these days) it elevates my riding quite a bit. Right now I'll finish in the top 10 on the Nyack Ride on a good day, that means I hang with the best climbers until about .25 miles from the top of the .7 mile Hook Mtn finish. After that I fade. But I am quite confident that 5 lbs lighter, I would be right there. I go from being a mediocre climber to a less mediocre climber when I'm skinnier, and that really helps tremendously. It's often a fine line between getting gapped on some climbs in competitive riding situations or making over the top with what's left of the bunch.
Losing that weight helps my riding in every way. I'm riding MUCH better today than I was in April, climbing better, more VO2 capacity, faster, better snap, etc. Actually helped my team in the last couple of 35+ races. My problem is OFF the bike. I don't have the discipline to pass on that ice cream, or eat less, or generally be as strict as I should be about what I eat. Can't get away with anything @ age 50. I could at age 35.
If I was at this point in May, it would be good. But it's August. The racing season is almost over. It's frustrating. That's why I'll pile on miles from now through December. My goal is to go to a New Year's Party and have people ask me if I'm sick or something because I look gaunt. I could give a **** about being thin for any other reason than cycling. I ride best @ 165 lbs. or less. If I didn't ride I'd be 190 lbs in about three weeks. Trust me. I'm not a little climber, and if I don't watch what I eat and ride a lot I go to 180-190 instantly (5'11", large frame). I don't look overweight at 185 lbs either, not at all.
I wish I could develop a nice, helpful teenage whackjob eating disorder.

Try this.....awaken and ride 20-40 miles every morning on an empty stomach in zone 1-3.....do that for a few weeks and maybe cut back a little on the food and you will shed quickly.
As for your diet..................... QSYP

Depends on the altitude. Try for the Leadville next year.

Nobody called me mentally weak after I kicked large doses of oxycontin (I was on it for long term back pain after failed surgery) cold turkey without medical supervision and started riding my bike. Try that some time. Let me know how that works out for you.

Cool post...It's good to hear stories from less than perfect people. By the way while I was reading your post I ate two Klondike bars!

Eat the damn ice cream and just accept being slow.
Life is too short and at 50 yours is even shorter than mine. Enjoy it on both ends.

you have to be careful though, it's easy to burn up muscle that way.
30 minutes of cardio after your last meal also helps.
small frequent meals with fat and protein in each one, no bread or high glycemic carbs, lots of water.
bottom line of course is you gotta burn less than take in.
of course there's always clenbuterol...
