Road Cycling “It is by riding a bicycle that you learn the contours of a country best, since you have to sweat up the hills and coast down them. Thus you remember them as they actually are, while in a motor car only a high hill impresses you, and you have no such accurate remembrance of country you have driven through as you gain by riding a bicycle.” -- Ernest Hemingway

SPD question

I just got an 03 Lemond Buenos Aries that came with double sided pedals (M515 I think). I was using a double sided SPD with a plastic platform around them that came on my 01 Specialized Sirrus Comp. I am using Sidi Genius 4 shoes with the SPD adapter on the sole.

The issue I am having is that I now get a hot spot on the sole of my left foot! The only time I had problems with my feet in the past was when I over-tightened my shoes (like an idiot). I have tried gel pads in the soles and also got a pair of Petterson Power Beds.

The gel pads did little and the Power Beds did take away the problem with the sole of my foot, but they seem to put extra pressure on my arch and make the shoe tighter so I can't wear anything but fairly thin socks.

Is this due to the smaller contact area of the new SPD? If so, is there a solution other than getting another type of pedal? What other pedal system would work better (ie. Speedplay, look etc.)?

Any help would be appreciated...Bill
