Road Cycling “It is by riding a bicycle that you learn the contours of a country best, since you have to sweat up the hills and coast down them. Thus you remember them as they actually are, while in a motor car only a high hill impresses you, and you have no such accurate remembrance of country you have driven through as you gain by riding a bicycle.” -- Ernest Hemingway

It doesn't look that deep - it's also on the thickest part of the tire. If it's not going too deep, I'd be OK with it.

If it's just rubber-deep, it's fine. If you can see the threads of the casing, use it as a trainer tire. No use risking a blowout.

From the pic it looks like its barely in the surface of the rubber. You should be fine. A cut in the tread that's not through to the casing is not going to cause the tire to blow out. Perhaps it very slightly increase the risk of puncture, but even that would be miniscule.

If you ride Pro 3 Races, and you're going to replace them everytime they get nicked to that degree you're going to spend a lot of money.

Fold up a dollar bill and put it between the tube and the tire if the cut is deep into the rubber.

Booting tires with cash works very well.

I have spent over $25 during the last 10 years of riding to not buy a new tire for a few more weeks after getting gashed.

$1 bills are fine, too, BT.

I'd ride that thing like a hot woman.

Thanks for the replies. I will just place some glue between the cut to feel some relief.

BTW, I am also considering getting some new set of tires. My question now is, Are schwalbe ultremo tires any good? How about Conti 4000 tires?

+1 on glue from experience and no it doesn't look catastrophic, but watch it like the crack in your windshield.

Use the glue if it'll give you peace of mind. Do you have a sense of how deep that is? I'll bet that in a few hundred miles it'll have worn away anyhow. (I think?) NomadVW posted a picture of an old tire head sliced in half to understand how much tread was really left, and he found that the tread is still surprisingly thick even when the tire is well and truly squared off.

18 posts of worthless speculation. If that cut is on the tread only and not through the cords, then it's fine. If it isn't, then replace the tire.

Don't know how good they are, but they are no longer shown on Schwalbe's NA web page. Though I would swear I saw them just a couple of days ago.

Your choices may have narrowed.

So does this mean that I should have replaced my front tire after I put about a half inch gash all the way through the sidewall when I slipped off the rollers about 1300 miles ago?

I did, however, cover the gash with about 10 layers of Duct Tape...
