Road Cycling “It is by riding a bicycle that you learn the contours of a country best, since you have to sweat up the hills and coast down them. Thus you remember them as they actually are, while in a motor car only a high hill impresses you, and you have no such accurate remembrance of country you have driven through as you gain by riding a bicycle.” -- Ernest Hemingway

Component Compatibility?

Hello all – I’m new to the forums and want to get into road cycling, but I am working under a few constraints, and would very much appreciate your guidance on some technical aspects of road bike components.

Suppose I had a really old Concord mountain bike – would it be possible to strip off all of the components and use the frame to build up new bike with road components or do the dimensions of the mountain bike frame just make it a non-starter? The reason I ask is that it may be a while before I find a road frameset that I am happy with, and I would really like to get out riding on something. I know it won’t be optimal, or even advisable, but can it be done? Even if it’s just wheels and peddles at first, it would be better than what I have now.

Mountain frames use 135mm wide rear hubs.

Road wheels are 130mm wide.

That'll be your first problem in a list of many.

Tune up the mountain bike and ride it until you can buy a real road bike. Maybe get some road tires for it, or even convert it to a single speed. Get it fit to you and ride, ride, ride...

Trying to convert that to a "real" road bike is a money pit and an aggravation magnet.

Yeah, I sort of thought that this would be the case. Thanks for confirmation.
