Road Cycling “It is by riding a bicycle that you learn the contours of a country best, since you have to sweat up the hills and coast down them. Thus you remember them as they actually are, while in a motor car only a high hill impresses you, and you have no such accurate remembrance of country you have driven through as you gain by riding a bicycle.” -- Ernest Hemingway

Under 2 hours!!!

My kids love the video and laugh that he dropped the adult at the finish...

I have so many questions for the kid. His bike set up, training, support on the road...

What an accomplishment for a 9 year old...

Great job...

I am incredibly impressed!!!

Yeah, well, I bet back in the day I could have done it on my Murray 3 speed with banana seat, wheelie bars and those little spoke thingies. Maybe.

Last time I checked, I rode my bike far more often as a kid.

That's a heck of an ASSumption there...

How do you know the kid doesn't have a genuine love of riding? Maybe he saw dad do the hill climb in the past and wanted to try it. There are any number of reasons, plus when you boil it down what is more kid like than getting out on a bike and riding around?

Trust me. If a kid doesn't want to do something like that, they won't. My ten year old has had a road bike for almost two years and has barely touched it once. My eight year old has been DYING to grow into it. When I finally got her on it, she put in 90+ miles in four days (straight) and she called all the shots. I was just along for the ride. She picked her mileage and her pace. I seriously doubt the nine year old was pushed into doing Mt. Washington.

Now back to the OP...that was great!!!

Oh boy, maybe we're going to get a youngest-to-summit-Mt. Washington contest a la Everest. Personally, I'm much more impressed by a sixty NINE year old doing it.

haha yeah that was epic fail. I would just turn around and ride down the side of the mountain if I was in that guys position. Being 40 years old and being outdone by a 20 year old isn't bad since the 20 year old is nearing his prime. being any age other than 70+ and being outdone by a 9 year has got to be humiliating.

Man if I had parents who would've bought me a road bike at that age I would've been a happy kid. I waited so long to ride my dads old 56cm Schwinn Le Tour only to manage to shear the crank arm off after a couple of years and spend another half a year off the bike. I would've been glad to do something like that as a kid, but sadly you need to have supporting parents to be able to. A Kid of that age can't afford a bike, no matter how hard he tries, all he can do is please his parents.

When I was 9 no one in their right mind wanted a "10-speed". Those were the worst bikes on the planet to ride. BMX bikes were all the rage at that age and if you didn't have one, you walked. I didn't know a single kid growing up who had a road bike. My sister's older friends had them, but I wanted a BMX.

Fast forward only six years and I was buying my first road bike, a Gardin Ultima with brand new Shimano S.I.S. shifting. Revolutionary at the time - click shifting... whodathunkit.

I've seen parents pushing their kids mercilessly when I marshalled at a youth triathlon. Some of those parents need help!

This was not the case here. When I saw him he was genuinely enjoying himself. His parents gave him the support he needed to get there.
