Road Cycling “It is by riding a bicycle that you learn the contours of a country best, since you have to sweat up the hills and coast down them. Thus you remember them as they actually are, while in a motor car only a high hill impresses you, and you have no such accurate remembrance of country you have driven through as you gain by riding a bicycle.” -- Ernest Hemingway

Uhhh computer and trainer...

I just realized that my wireless cateye really can't go on the rear wheel I'm pretty sure the signal won't reach from my rear wheel to my bars, whenever I want my computer to stop reading data i just have to put it in my rear jersey pocket.

What would you guys do in this situation, is it as important to know your average speed and such on the trainer or is just using a stop watch sufficient? I'm hoping to get a garmin 305 which I assume I can mount to the back wheel in the next few months but what should I do till then?

The Cat Eye V2c is rear-wheel mounted, includes cadence, and is wireless. It uses coded-digital signals. I just got mine this week. 150 miles and literally zero interference of any kind. When you're finished with the ride, just reset the computer, and the ride data is saved in a file you can access when you get home. Coolest thing ever.

The V3c includes a heart rate monitor.

get an old wired one that reaches the rear. I use the Kurt Kinetic power computer; mounts on the rear and gives me wattage to boot.

You know what...I just remembered I have a wired $20.00 Cateye sitting on a mountain bike in my basement, I bet I could find some way to just strap it on for the trainer sessions and leave it sitting on the ground till my work out is over, i know they make removeable zip ties.

problem solved

Probably a dumb question, but..... Why the heck are you using a trainer already?

Not dumb at all, esp since I live in So-Cal. I'm a web-designer for a pretty large talk show, we go back on air for our next season soon and my hours are going to become completely unpredictable. For all I know some days I might work 8 hours, but on average I'll be working 12 hours. I don't mind riding in rain, wind, or cold but I can't stand riding in the dark, I get unmotivated and don't trust LA drivers during the day, let alone at night. I decided I'd get a lot more riding done if I had a trainer at my disposal. I also want to use it for recovery rides in the morning before work. Finally air quality in LA isn't terrible but in Burbank smog seems to get trapped and the air quality is typically "unhealthy for sensitive lungs" and sometimes unhealthy for everyone so on days like that I try to ride in doors. If I'm just going to do speed work there's no reason to suck down exhaust if I don't have to.

^^^^ Ah, gotcha. California drivers scare me too. Day or night. I'm not looking forward to pulling my trainer out this year. This summer has flown by way to fast. Hoping for a long fall season.

I used an old cateye wired for the trainer until I got my Garmin.

One of the neat things about trainer miles is that they are consistent. So you can do 5 mile time trials and really see if your are improving.

My summer is ending - I teach - so although I can still ride in Wisconsin till the end of November, I know that I'll be doing trainer miles again very soon

Chemistry.

As far as I could tell, the only thing my classes ride are cars. Better than what the teachers drive.

Although some hipsters are starting to show up on fixies.

Virtually worthless, unless you know the trainer's power curve, and are using speed to estimate power. However I'm not sure that's very accurate.

You need a HRM, and a clock or watch with a second hand. (ther second hand allows you time your cadence.)
