Picking the Proper Saddle

Road Cycling “It is by riding a bicycle that you learn the contours of a country best, since you have to sweat up the hills and coast down them. Thus you remember them as they actually are, while in a motor car only a high hill impresses you, and you have no such accurate remembrance of country you have driven through as you gain by riding a bicycle.” -- Ernest Hemingway

Picking the Proper Saddle

I'm looking to buy a new bike saddle. The stock Bontrager saddle I have on my bike is unbelievably uncomfortable. At first it wasn't bad but after 300 miles on it, I can't take it anymore. This will be my first saddle purchase and I don't want to just rush out and buy what looks nice (Fizik Arione...). The problem is that I don't really know how to figure out what will fit me. Anyone have any tips for picking the proper saddle?
