How critical....
How critical is it to grease crank/pedal threads before installing a new set of pedals? Just got my looks and would like to use them on the ride home but do not have any grease.
Thanks.
Thanks.

Put grease or anti-seize compound on all your metal threads. If you don't, they may not torque properly and/or may be impossible to remove later.

You could ride them home, then take them out and grease them and re-install!

Also what would be the right type of grease to use for this type of thing? The last pedals I had were installed when I bought the bike and never changed.

a beg to differ...but I also had 3 headsets, and 3 sets of wheels to grease and had a couple of times when I made a mistake and had to pretty much redo it. I still have a good part of the tube left and i'm sure now that I don't have to grease my hubs once every year it'll last me a while. But park grease is the same grease that I used to put my pedals on, you really don't need too much though.

you want to know how important it is to grease the threads of pedals?
well, I have this trainer, and I thank the mechanic who put grease on the pedal threads because after 6mo of sitting outside in the rain, the pedals came off with minimal effort.

That being said, I can't garuntee that my pedals won't ever get wet so I will stop and get some grease on the way home.

without grease on the threads, it's not possible to get a reliable torque reading, if you're using a torque wrench.
also note, pedals can tend to start clicking or creaking if you don't grease the threads and torque them to manufacturer spec.

good points.
I have 12 bikes and 4 pair of pedals. I switch things around to ride different bikes for different occasions. So not as important to me.
