So Icy Hot destroys helmets.
Did any of you know this? Last weekend I noticed some Icy Hot had gotten on one of the vent areas of my helmet, figured it must have leaked out of the bottle while it was sitting in my helmet on the drive to the ride.
I finally got around to cleaning it off last night only to find it had melted the helmet styrofoam! I don't think the helmets ruined, but It's bumming me out, esp since I have no money right now to buy a new one.
I figured this was worth posting since Icy Hot is a pretty common thing for athletes to use.

Reminds me of 7th grade drafting class where we had to build models of or "dream homes" out of foam board after drawing the plans. We all spent weeks on them. The night before the projects were due one kid got the bright idea of spray painting his model. He came in the next morning with melted blob that used to be his house.

You can use it as chamois cream, but don't splatter tons of it on the pad.
You DON'T want to know what that feels like. If you put a little, it feels like a cool mountain breeze down under there.

Just make sure to apply your chamois cream first and then your icy hot. Not the other way around. Or wash your hands very well.

I was rubbing my quads down with icy hot last month and the girl I was dating was over and had just woken up. I gave her a icy hot covered slap on the butt, she was not amussed at the result.

I've had a similar problem with sun screen breaking down the rubber on my heart rate monitors. It gets all soft and pliable, and eventually stuff like rubber-coated button covers and water-proofing o-rings wear out. When that happens, it just a matter of time before water gets inside the unit and destroys it.
And it is a good idea to keep stuff like icy-hot away from your face or nether regions.

Too bad about the helmet.
Topical treatments always struck me as bunk. I've tried them in the past and never noticed any difference for recovery from training, overtraining, or injuries. Funny how long that first "I'll give it a try" tube can last if you never use it.
Embrace the pain in your quads. Relish it. Go find more. Don't mask it!

Honestly I doubt icy hot does anything it just feels really good and soothing. If I really want to calm hurt muscles because i didn't stretch or take a recovery drink, I'll use alieve.

Methyl salicylate is toxic in fairly low doses. Here's some interesting reading on it. It probably metabolizes in a similar manner to aspirin or it may split the methanol group off and for salicylic acid - aspirin -in the body. I found frightening this one frightening
Methyl salicylate (Oil of Wintergreen, Ben Gay) is one infrequent cause of salicylate poisoning but is the most dangerous salicylate formulation by strength. One teaspoon contains 7,000 mg of salicylate, equivalent to 21 aspirin tablets, and childhood fatalities may occur after ingestion of as little as 4 ml of Oil of Wintergreen. A 1 oz tube of external liniment (20% methyl salicylate) is equivalent to the above fatal dose of Oil of Wintergreen. When applied to large areas of skin, topical salicylic acid may cause sufficient dermal absorption to produce toxic serum salicylate levels

You might be ok if it's isolated to one small spot, but if your liner has been compromised, it's toast dude.

It's one small spot on the foam near the top, problem is even if it's trashed there's no money to replace it. I just got into debt to a family member and it will be awhile before I can pay it off.

Jeez, after reading that article it kind of makes me want to lay off the icy hot. I'll probably always use their icy hot bandages for when I pull a muscle on a ride and have to drive home, I like keeping one in my bag just in case.
