Road Cycling “It is by riding a bicycle that you learn the contours of a country best, since you have to sweat up the hills and coast down them. Thus you remember them as they actually are, while in a motor car only a high hill impresses you, and you have no such accurate remembrance of country you have driven through as you gain by riding a bicycle.” -- Ernest Hemingway

Cable rattles on the front tube

On my Madone 5.2 the brake cables run on the side of the front tube, resulting in ridiculous rattling when they hit the frame.
Does anyone have a clean solution to stopping this noise?

Most LBS's should have these little rubber donuts (that's what we call them). This used to be really annoying on my steel frames until someone schooled me. Good Luck.

I picked up some clear tubing from Lowe's and slit the whole length and slid it over the cable.

He's apparently talking about the cable housing rattling against the headtube, not the shift cables hitting the downtube. The little donuts would solve the shift cable problem, but not the noise of the cable housing rattle from the brake cables. My bike does the same thing, and I just deal with it.

Yes thank you' i meant the cable housing.

Some sol'n must exist to get rid of the clanking noise when the housing hits the frame....

Tape a piece of foam rubber weather stripping around the housing in the area where it is rattling against the head tube. You can get elctrical tape in several colors now.

i concur with the previous poster. electrical "finishing" tape comes in a lot of colors. likewise you could get a more well marketed housing cover of some type. although this may be obvious to you, check to make sure the rattling isn't actually coming from your headset...if you put on the tape or cover and you still hear a rattling, just get it checked out.

just use some heat shrink, works better than electrical tape.

You could do something similar to the inner cable donuts with the proper sized o-ring on the cable housing. You could also use these frame patches from Lizard Skin. Or the loopy parts from velcro...use the industrial strength stuff 'cause it sticks like crazy.

Edit: A little more digging on the Lizard Skins website came up with these spiffy things

These rubber sleeves from PBK are the answer. Pricey for what they they are, they solve the problem and look OK. The little donuts referenced earlier are not quite the right solution.
