Square taper to external bearing... upgrade?

Road Cycling “It is by riding a bicycle that you learn the contours of a country best, since you have to sweat up the hills and coast down them. Thus you remember them as they actually are, while in a motor car only a high hill impresses you, and you have no such accurate remembrance of country you have driven through as you gain by riding a bicycle.” -- Ernest Hemingway

Square taper to external bearing... upgrade?

My bike is at the shop to warranty out a loose BB. If a new BB will fix the issue (IE the threads in the frame are ok) I have the option of a stock replacement under warrenty (08 Felt standard square taper BB) or having them install an external BB and crankest at a discount.

Current cranks are triple FSA Veros.

I would be looking at the Gossamer in a compact, the Energy in a compact for about $50 more, or a 105 compact for $50 more than that.

I don't really care about a triple or a compact, but I can live with either. I am 225lbs so I want something stiff and reliable.

My compact gossamer shifted pretty poorly after about 2000 miles. No amount of adjustment would keep it from dropping the chain off of one side, or rubbing in certain combos.

Check out the Shimano r-700, which I believe is now called the Ultegra Compact.

If you want reliable, you should consider moving away from FSA products. If you want really reliable, Shimano square taper bottom brackets are amazing, as the cranks. External bearing set ups expose the bearings to bad weather more than normal bbs, so that is something to consider if you ride in the rain a lot.

how about just a tiagra triple or compact? shimano quality without the premium of weight reductions.

This is what I did. Tiagra triple, and a 105 external BB. I couldn't justify the extra $70 or whatever for the 105 triple, with no upgrade but finish and weight loss (32g).

I would have had to change the FD to switch to a compact, and honestly I don't have issues with my triple as of this point. I tend to stay in the middle ring (39) all the time, so I could have went with a standard double, but beside looks I didn't see the point in loosing the small ring.

My experience was identical, except my gossamer developed noises that neither I nor the shop could fix. I switched to R700 and never looked back.
