Pondering replacing a perfectly good wheelset...

Road Cycling “It is by riding a bicycle that you learn the contours of a country best, since you have to sweat up the hills and coast down them. Thus you remember them as they actually are, while in a motor car only a high hill impresses you, and you have no such accurate remembrance of country you have driven through as you gain by riding a bicycle.” -- Ernest Hemingway

Pondering replacing a perfectly good wheelset...

My Six13 came with Ksyrium Equipe wheels. Technically speaking, there's nothing wrong with these wheels. They're light (enough for me) they look nice, they function well, they've held up over some rough potholes.

But I didn't build them. That one minor little fact kinda gets to me, for some reason.

So, is the Ksyrium Equipe, taken as an engineered whole, a better system than the equivalent cost equivalent weight Open Pro/Ultegra combination?

Though a 32 spoke 3 cross wheel will handle some abuse better (particularly twisting), I have a funny feeling that there would be no real benefit to replacing the wheel with a self-built.

Of course, it never hurts to have some spare wheels around!

There's nothing wrong with enjoying your skills, then riding the new wheels instead of your current wheels. You don't have to get a speed benefit from every decision you make. The enjoyment of building a wheelset is probably a good mental health option

There's nothing wrong with having a closet full of wheels.

Other than the fact it prevents you from having a closet full of other stuff. Until recently my closet held:
  • Three Zipp 404's
  • pair of Reynolds Alta Comps
  • pair of Cane Creek Volos tubs
  • old custom frame

plus the Ksyriums on the bike leaning against my dresser. I finally sold the Volos'.

Those are true words.

And because of that I'm certain I'll build a different wheelset anyway. But, there's still the question: are the Ksyriums a better system than what I can build with "traditional" stuff?
