Road Cycling “It is by riding a bicycle that you learn the contours of a country best, since you have to sweat up the hills and coast down them. Thus you remember them as they actually are, while in a motor car only a high hill impresses you, and you have no such accurate remembrance of country you have driven through as you gain by riding a bicycle.” -- Ernest Hemingway

Is it me or is Performance impossible to deal with?

I buy a cheesy wireless bike computer from Performance three months ago. The fork transmitter goes bad, won't send a signal even with a fresh battery (could be the head unit, but I figure it's easier to just try a new fork pickup/transmitter). I email their customer service dept. on this. I get this legal brief back from them about what I have to do to get a new transmitter, which I figure is a $5 part (the manufacturer had pawned me off on the place I purchased it).

Am I wrong, or would the dude @ Colorado Cyclist simply have said 'OK, we'll ship you a new transmitter, or just send the old computer back and we'll send out a new one'.? This guy at Performance wanted an Act of Congress, forms on the Internet filled out etc. It was just too much trouble for a $25 computer.

I just ordered a new one. From Performance. That will of course be the last money I ever spend there for the rest of my bike weenie life. They DO suck.

What. You didn't see the trojan they installed on your computer? They know everything about you and how best to piss you off. So, yes. It's just you.

Now go crush some souls.

I guess I fall in the lesser percent category. I have a Performance about 12 miles from the hacienda and I have received nothing less than stellar service from them.

I've only had to return one item, buyer error, and it was a no questions asked painless evolution.

They match web prices too.

I go in the early mornings due to my nocturnal existence and the average age of the guys working then is about 55. Might make a difference, dunno.

How long until Pcad caves on this one? You know that at some point he will get a hugh case of bikeweenieschwagitis and won't spent the extra $ to have pbk overnight the stuff.

I give him three weeks.

All in all, he is right about PBS being a PITA.

Performance doesn't have the best prices on everything but they have a great return policy. Sometimes I'd have a part that I'd never use for.....a year. Unused, no receipt...they took it back for store credit, haha.

Yup. Customer service sucks, return policy rocks.

Pcad, you should have just returned the whole thing for a refund, bought it or something similar again.

Their local retail stores make them much easier to deal with on returns.

a fellow bf'er returned a set of bibs he had worn for quite a while. No problem - full credit and they dumped them in the "these are filled with feces particles so don't resell them" bin

Second the Cateye Astrale. Been using a wired Cateye Astrale on every road bike I have (5 currently running) since around 1994. Probably done 20K miles in pouring rain with these.

I tried calling Colorado Cyclist once, and I mis-dialed, and it turned out to be Nashbar that answered. I made mention of it on here and was told that Nashbar/Colorad Cyclist were purchased by Performance.

Not sure if it's all true though.

If you push it on the phone a little bit, they will send you a new one. If you know someone with a Performance store in their town, then you are virtually guaranteed a free replacement. We have one here in town, and I've replaced 2 heart rate monitors with no questions asked at my local Performance store (my sun screen eats some types of water proofing gaskets), and I've heard similar stories from other local cyclists. Even for component parts that were definitely harmed due to user error. They just replace it.

I say find the phone number that is buried on the site somewhere and talk to a real person. You will probably get a new unit fast.
