Road Cycling “It is by riding a bicycle that you learn the contours of a country best, since you have to sweat up the hills and coast down them. Thus you remember them as they actually are, while in a motor car only a high hill impresses you, and you have no such accurate remembrance of country you have driven through as you gain by riding a bicycle.” -- Ernest Hemingway

Need Entry Level Bike

I'm interested in getting into road biking, but don't think I will get very serious. Just a "week warrior" and some group rides as most. More for enjoyment and exercise, so I went to a local bike shop and they have a KHS Flite 220 Triple (https://www.khsbicycles.com/05_flite_220T_08.htm) for $510. But I was checking craigslist and found a '01 Giant GCR for $300.

Should I go for one of these two bikes? Or keep look at go for others?

I'm looking for something under 500 that would be great for beginners. I've read most of the guides here and around the net, but is there anything outstanding I need to know about purchasing?

Thanks!

Go for the new bike or ask if you can have the Giant looked at by a professional before you buy it. You never know what could be wrong with a used bike. You could end up spending hundreds.

Everyone below me that will post will ask to to spend more money and get tiagra or 105 components. But, I really think you'll be fine with the $510 bike. Going used is great but there is risk involved. On the other hand, LBS will help you with maintenance and fit.

I am new to riding and have a khs flite 320 and love it. If the bike feels right for you and you can afford it, i would go for it. that one has a slanted frame so im not sure if its gonna be something you want. ive been told that the slanted frames can be uncomfortable to ride.

The advantage of buying from the shop is that they will fit the bike for you, tune it up, and then make adjustments a month from now after you have put some miles on the bike. The difference between a $500 bike that is well tuned and one that is not is "night and day".

As a new rider PLEASE go to your local bike shop and buy a bike that has been expertly assembled and fitted to you. Also they will be there for your questions and can help you with the needed accesories.

I tried to find Giant GCR on bikepedia, but could not. I'm assuming you meant a TCR (2,1,or 0) and hit the wrong key or an OCR (1,2 or3). While I would usually say go with the new bike, if that's a TCR, any model TCR, thats a really good deal if it's in good shape. I mean, a 9 speed 105, carbon fork for $200 less dollars, might be worth considering. If it's a 01, OCR 3, go for the new bike instead.
