Road Cycling “It is by riding a bicycle that you learn the contours of a country best, since you have to sweat up the hills and coast down them. Thus you remember them as they actually are, while in a motor car only a high hill impresses you, and you have no such accurate remembrance of country you have driven through as you gain by riding a bicycle.” -- Ernest Hemingway

Further proof that the Giro and Vuelta are better than and more fun than the Tour!

I'm so confused. Can someone translate what happened? Why was the guy running with antlers and a US flag? Why did the rider take it from him? Why did he then throw it on the ground?

1)He is a fan from the USA

2)Because he wanted to be funny

3)He wanted to finish the race without the flag and it is hard to ride with a big flag.

I figured all that out without a translator.

Teh guy with antlers is at a lot of big races, TDF, TDC, TDG etc. and Fletcha was just having fun.

I've seen pictures already where riders have swapped helmets with the motorbike riders! (I think at the Giro). riding your bike for hours on end for a 2 weeks straight can start to get a little boring. ; )

I got most of that. I couldn't tell if he took it because he didn't like the US and wanted to throw it on the ground. Not really far fetched these days.

Ok. Now it's cool.

some would argue that the polo shirts and white sneakers most take on vacation is an insult. Toss in speaking 25% louder then the locals and bingo - ugly American

Gotta say, I laughed at the sight of the Antler Man walking to pick up the flag after Flecha dropped it.

Indeed anybody who thinks that Flecha or the French commentators had an anti-American agenda certainly have no clue what this is all about. It was a practical joke and it could have been any flag.

Indeed, anybody who thinks these commentators (or Flecha for that matter) have some sort of an agenda against the US is an idiot. Is was obviously just a spur of the moment joke. I mean, it could have been any flag.

Yes i think that was obvious. And I thought it was entirely playful.
However, once he had the flag it would have been more respectful to hand it to another spectator. I am no jingoist, but Flecha's actions are, by definition, disrespectful to the flag. There are those who - if they see it - will use this incident to fan further the flames of nativism and other-hate which are already far too hot in this country.
As well, I wonder how the commentators would have reacted if it had been the tri-color Flecha had grabbed and then dropped?

Probably not a big deal, Germans have been dropping the tri-color since 1914.
