What kind of race wheels for $3-500?
I'm ready to spend $3-600 on race wheels. These won't see use outside of races, which around here are crits and some longer road races. I weigh 170-175 depending on my lunch that day
Handbuilt: DA hubs/good butted spokes like Sapim or something/Velocity Escape (tubular) rims
vs.
Deep-section carbon clinchers (don't want to have to use carbon brake pads, so carbon tubies seem to be out), like the Neuvation C50s
vs.
Nice metal clinchers like Krysium Equipes or Elites
HALP!

Mavic Ksyrium Elites are $499 at most stores (though you can have them for cheaper from eBay).

Only on relative terms.
And yes, they're tanks and cannot be destroyed.

Easton EA90Slx, lighter, nicer than the Mavis also $500 on sale at Beyond Bikes in san diego. I've ridden mine for 2 year, put on some ProRace2 tires and light tubes....bliss on wheels. My Mavic Ksy Elites ride much stiffer, and are a little heavier (100 or 150 grams for the pari) heavier.

Jet Jockey
I've seen some '06 Elites for that low, but '06 Elites are basically '08 Equipes.

You could put some IRD Niobium's w/ White Industry hubs (DT Swiss spokes) for under $600... they come in under 1400g.
Same rim and spokes with DA hubs are slightly cheaper and slightly heavier (150g).

That's the ticket for some "do everything" wheels.

American Classic 420's actually aren't too bad (referencing the big aero wheel test). New they are something like $800. I got mine off of Ebay for $415, and that's not an uncommon price.
I've never seen numbers from a wheel made with a Niobium 30 rim. The AC 420 is 34mm deep, for reference, so it's probably not that different.
