Is there a TUNE-UP Guideline?

Road Cycling “It is by riding a bicycle that you learn the contours of a country best, since you have to sweat up the hills and coast down them. Thus you remember them as they actually are, while in a motor car only a high hill impresses you, and you have no such accurate remembrance of country you have driven through as you gain by riding a bicycle.” -- Ernest Hemingway

Is there a TUNE-UP Guideline?

Cars have the recommended OIL CHANGE / TUNE-UP every 5K miles sort of thing. Is there a general guideline for when to take your bike to a shop for them to do a full inspect/analysis on it??

What do you guys generally do to make sure a bike is in good running condition? I've just read so many horror stories on here that I'm scared that one day I will be riding and something goes wrong on my bike and owns me.

Thanks in advance

Higher-end bike shops. Or online.
