Road Cycling “It is by riding a bicycle that you learn the contours of a country best, since you have to sweat up the hills and coast down them. Thus you remember them as they actually are, while in a motor car only a high hill impresses you, and you have no such accurate remembrance of country you have driven through as you gain by riding a bicycle.” -- Ernest Hemingway

Cannodale hand made in the USA?

I'm curious as to whether my 2008 Six13 and 2008 Capo where completely built in the US. He wants to say a lot of it is Taiwanese. Any idea?

I don't see how they get away with putting "Handmade In The USA" on their bikes if they're just assembled here.

My Treks are "Handmade in the U.S.A" and are both made in Taiwan probably by Trek.

The link in my sig says that 60% of the value has to be added in the country that it claims it is made in and I would think if they added one component by hand it would count as handmade. Frames are very cheap. My bike originally are the Trek 3900 for $360 and the Trek 1000 for $750 and I would say that the value/cost of the frame is way less than 40% of the price I paid for it.

It is just a marketing thing that became legally backed. Many things are marketing things. Who knows if high fructose corn syrup is really worse than plain cane sugar? Who knows if Wal-Mart really is the cheapest place to shop? There are points to prove both sides and as long as not too many people care, it just gets by and unsuspecting people will pay that premium - which is what the businesses want anyways. You got to admit that "Handmade in the U.S.A." is a heck of a lot better than "Bonded, welded, and painted in Taiwan/China, then components attached in the U.S.A." Hell, I would not be surprised if the LBS putting your bike together in the shop counted as "Handmade in the U.S.A."

If you are worried about quality, it doesn't matter where it is made as long as the company that buys it demands a certain quality because the company is the main outlet and will be the one that is liable.

Because both of the mentioned bike's frames are made in Bedford.

BTW...the Six/13 no longer exists as a new bike in the Cannondale line.

I met the guy that did most of the layup work on my Super Six.

My daughter has a Capo, the same one pictured even though I told her to buy the retro Red/White one! Kids these days

Other than the frame, I suspect every other part, from handlebars to each individual bearing is made in the Pacific rim.

I read that Cannondale has their frames made in Taiwan, is that not correct? Does anyone have any documentation online about this?

Some of their frames are made in the US, but the low-end ones are made in China. Just what kind of documentation are you looking for?

I don't know, something that Cannondale has put out was what I was hoping for. I'm guess it doesn't matter. I'm just trying to win an argument with a friend.

I think it would be fair to say that virtually all of the bikes made by the major brands are fabricated overseas under contract....especially in carbon frames.

If you are looking for a true, "made-in-the-USA" bike you'll probably need to shop for something in ti or steel from a true American bikesmith like Moots, Serotta, Litespeed, Lynsky, Independent Fabrications, Richard Sacks, etc.

A $4 per day garment worker can layup carbon fiber over a mold, but it takes a lot more skill and money to properly execute a filet weld on thin-wall ti or steel. And the people who can do that get paid aerospace wages.

If you are looking for a particular frame check out some sites which offer info on them; I know I've seen a few which list the low end Cannondales as being made in China. Alternatively you can call a Cannondale dealer and ask them, or email Cannondale directly.

from what i understand, my systemsix is half and half. the carbon front triangle is made in china, since i found a sticker on my fork saying that. and the rear aluminum triangle where it says made in usa, is actually made in pennsylvania believe. so where they put made in the usa doesn't necessarily mean the whole bike, just that portion of it.

Main reason I bought a new Madone was it fit and felt great. Another important reason was that the frame was made in Waterloo, WI.

Hi Matt!

Your six13 was made in Bedford, Pennsylvania, as was my CAAD9. Certain carbon frames (Synapse, the Six series for '09, some carbon MTBs) are made in Taiwan, but those DO NOT say "handmade in USA" anywhere on them. Cannondale is very upfront about which bikes come from Asia and which are homegrown.

High-end carbon, such as the SuperSix (and Rise on the MTB side) are made in Bedford, too.

Hope you're riding that thing, and not just worrying about it ! We got in 70 miles this AM...

-Tommy

EDIT: The Capo is Bedford-made as well- it's basically a CAAD5 frame with singlespeed dropouts, from my understanding.

No, your fork was made in China. The frame for the SystemSix was 100% US made. Cannondale makes the rear end of the Rush Carbon MTB frame in Bedford, while the carbon front triangle comes from Asia. Guess what? No "handmade in USA" decal on that frame.

If you want "handmade in USA" to mean the ENTIRE bike, good luck... no one is making derailleurs, shifters, etc. in the US. No one at all.

Counted the different countries where the stuff came from on one of my bike builds. 8 different countries of manufacture. Went window shopping with the wife today for a car. At least the window stickers tell the percentage as to where the stuff is made.

The Six13 was made in Bedford. The Aluminum tubes in it were made by ALCOA (ALuminum Corporation of America), and the CF, prior to '08, was layed up in Bedford as well. In '08 it was being ordered from Taiwan, and bonded to the Al sections in Bedford.
