Road Cycling “It is by riding a bicycle that you learn the contours of a country best, since you have to sweat up the hills and coast down them. Thus you remember them as they actually are, while in a motor car only a high hill impresses you, and you have no such accurate remembrance of country you have driven through as you gain by riding a bicycle.” -- Ernest Hemingway

Saturday's Ride (Sept 20th)

My father and I did a lovely 100 km jaunt out into the countryside around where we live. It was a beautiful sunny day, and all the leaves are starting to change.

Thanks. I like this time of year, and we've had an unseasonably warm stretch lately. It makes for great riding ... I've done 8 days in a row now!!

Had a nice 25 mile group ride on Saturday. Beautiful morning at around 68 degrees.

Rode with the local bike club but had a little bit of trouble keeping up with them at times.

Had the pleasure of riding with the Mother of one of our Bejiing Olympics Participants. Very interesting talking with her about her visit to China.

Overall, a great ride.

I did a 56 mile tri-county loop that has been on my "to ride" list all summer. Went by two ski slopes that I will be frequenting in just a matter of months. The only downside was a flat near the end.

40 miles in NE Hillsborough County... I've been messing with my cockpit, but I finally got my bike fit dialed in and it felt great.

Low clouds and humid... but towards the end the sun came out for 30 minutes or so... just enough to make you feel good before the heat comes!

Did a 41 mile ride out on some of the nice back roads near my house. Their were some decent size hills on the way out but after those it was fairly flat. Wind from the East at at 10 to 15mph so it gave me a nice breeze across, blew me around a little with the guest.

Also found a road called English Muffin Way which I found fairly funny. In all good ride and great way to start a saturday.

Did a 62-miler yesterday. Beautiful fall weather here in central NYS. I've been riding a month and have 450 miles on the bike. I'm shooting for 1,000 miles and at least one century before winter gets here. Inching closer to both with every ride.

Was my first day out with arm warmers and a vest. Went 31 mi from my house to the end of the RI bike path and back.. Annoying as hell Fred sighting.. guy had a radio mounted to his bike AND was singing along loudly. Suppose it was a mixed blessing as it pushed me to go faster to get the hell away from him.

Went out with a group yesterday for approximately 40 miles (can't be sure, forgot to reset the computer.... again). Everytime I thought it was warm enough to pull the arm warmers down we hit a patch of shade and I had to yank them back up. At least those things are so convenient. Other than my suseptibility to the cold it was a beautiful day, a wonderful ride, and a great group of people.

Did 60 miles with a local bike group here. Much of the ride had us out in beautiful country. The views, though simple, are just awesome. Rode to a small town coffee shop, had a breakfast sandwich, then rode back. Only problem was that the group was a little bit slower than I wanted to go. I ended up getting to be pretty late for work so they told me to go ahead and I booked it the last few miles back to my car. It was my first ride on my new Felt F5. I think I'm in love with the bike. Not so sure if I'm in love with my Arione saddle though. Started really hurting at around mile 50.

On a little side note, how do I take the little graphs from my Garmin 705 and save them so that I can post them here? Can I do it with Garmin Training Center?

Ummmm ... yeah! It's the middle of September!

This shot was taken on August 24th, at the start of Rowan's and my Wedding Century. Note the tights, jackets, and full-fingered gloves.

44.55 miles last night. I'm really enjoying my new lighting system. Ended the week with over 300 miles so todays ride will be a slow paced recovery ride.

60 mi, 3k ft climbing, 17.1 avg. in Warren County NJ and PA, near Del. Water Gap. Nice, flatish ride on a spectacular day. Low 50's at start, into 70's at end. A little warmer than yesterday. Had to slow down about half way through when my buddy had one of his $150 spokes () pull out of his Topolino wheels.

Almost 70 miles on 100% dirt mtb ride. A meer 14,000+ of climbing around Taos. Oh YEAH I'm feeling it today.

That first pic of your dad with one foot clipped in and a semi bearing down on him looks scary.....

It looks scarier that it was. That was a construction zone, and the traffic was, for the most part, moving relatively slowly and were keeping their distance from us. It was a beautiful section of road ... so fresh and smooth!!

Sounds like a fun trip. I had a little outing Friday, drove up to Oklahoma and rode a few miles. The leaves aren't starting to change, but there's some variations in the green that show it's on the way! And it's cooled off some, not sweater weather, but less-sweat weather, and that's nice.

50.27 miles 19.2avg....
came down to south florida for the weekend... started with the weekly sat ride, but flatted after 8 miles... so instead of doing the group 40 mile fast ride, I opted to go out a little further and do 50 miles..
of course a slight headwind going out and the wind turned around so I could get a slight headwind coming home... guess it's good training...

I was robbed of my supported group century last weekend on account of heavy rain (mostly because I was unable to HTFU). So I took advantage of a beautiful weekend. Did 107.6 miles in temps of upper 70s and a very light breeze. Was a great day!
