Road Cycling “It is by riding a bicycle that you learn the contours of a country best, since you have to sweat up the hills and coast down them. Thus you remember them as they actually are, while in a motor car only a high hill impresses you, and you have no such accurate remembrance of country you have driven through as you gain by riding a bicycle.” -- Ernest Hemingway

When it comes to milk, fresh is best. Local diary farms need to use less pasturization to help the milk stay fresh and less pasturization means more vitamins and protein for you.

Next you want a container that blocks light, since UV light will destroy the vitamins in the milk.

You also want milk from cows not fed antibiotics and have a more vegitarian diet (at least oats and grains if not grass and vegies).

Next I recommend whole grade A milk. Yes yes it has more fat, BUT vitamin A and D, which are the key vitamins in milk are fat soluable vitamins, are more readily absorbed by the body when mixed with fat. Milk fat is not a processed industrial product like vegitable oil or lard, its something your body can readily absorb and digest and thrive off of. ALSO, whole milk is not as processes as low fat or skim milk, which sometimes even have supplements added to compensate for the protien, vitamins and even texture that is lost in the fat reduction process.

As for the chocolate, grind some fresh dark chocolate and stir in for a good post ride recovery drink!

Is the chocolate flavor an important component? I've found that drinking regular milk after a ride feels pretty good, but I'm not in the habit of keeping chocolate milk around.

the flavor itself isn't important, it's the added carbs. regular milk has a good amount of protein, but hardly any carbs, which any active person needs plenty of. chocolate milk provides those extra carbs.

skim or 2% milk and Trader Joe's or Hershey's syrup is the way to go.

We get 2% milk delivered to the house from a local dairy (all natural, no antibiotics), and add Hershey's syrup.

Hershey's Low Fat Chocolate Milk...comes in cartons of 21 boxes (7-8oz each, I believe...don't have one in front of me). Cheap and easily available at Costco. That's what I use. Cheap, great tasting recovery food with a nice protein/carb ratio.

I had a truck come in to my warehouse last summer and he had a pallet of milk from organic valley he gave to us because he couldn't take it with him even though it was good (they had over shipped).

What to do with 2,016 quarts of organic whole milk....

so basically, what type do you drink, and where do you usually get it?!?!?
I am just surprised a stop and shop would have anything low fat. I suggest the 20 pack of powdered donuts or a box of little debbies.

Local Trader Joe Used to carry a brand with 160 calories per 8 oz. They sold it in half a gallon and 16oz bottles. Now half a gallon bottles have 210 calories per 8 oz. They still carry 16oz bottles with 160 calories per 8 oz, but it's expensive to but it that way. Every other chocolate milk brand from local grocery stores has 210 calories per 8 oz. Although I did find fat free nestle which has less, I guess I'll drink that for recovery. heh

i like nesquick. i mix it kinda light, with low fat milk, and i doubt that that would have more total fat then the pre-mixed chocolate milk that is low fat, because that milk has sooooo much chocolate. nesquick actually advertises some nutritional value.
