Road Cycling “It is by riding a bicycle that you learn the contours of a country best, since you have to sweat up the hills and coast down them. Thus you remember them as they actually are, while in a motor car only a high hill impresses you, and you have no such accurate remembrance of country you have driven through as you gain by riding a bicycle.” -- Ernest Hemingway

Rol D'huez rear wheel hub noise

I bought a specialized roubaix sl 6 months ago. After 3000 miles the original roval 322x wheelset was trashed - untrueable(the front wheel rim warped after knocking down a pedestrian). Based on review ratings for wheel sets at roadbikereview, I decided to go with ordering a Rol D'Huez wheelset. After 200 miles, I'm very happy with their performance-light, fast and very little rolling resistance. But the rear wheel makes a noticeable whirring noise-loud enough to grab the attention of other cyclist and pedestrians using the bike path(which I kinda like)-but not annoyingly loud. Does anybody know if this is normal for shimano rear wheel hubs on Rol wheels.

It's the freehub. My ROLs are noisy. I pulled the freehub body off and dripped some Phil oil in it and it is much quieter now.

Thanks for the reply damocles1. Now I know there's nothing wrong with the wheel. Shimano recommends not to take the freehub apart, the noise is useful on bikepaths, so I'll just leave it.
For peddlingpilgrim's curiosity, here's what happened. At the beach bike path, I was moving about 18mph, and noticed a teenager cross the bike path about 15-20ft in front of me. However, just before passing her, she suddenly changed her mind and without looking out for traffic she did an about turn and crossed in front of me. I braked hard, but still knocked her down. My bike flew out from underneath me and I went down hard on my shoulder landing on my mp3 player that was strapped there. She got up almost immediately, then distressed, she kept asking me if I was okay (Apparently, she was). I wasn't - a bruised shoulder, a cut and grazed knee, a smashed mp3 player and a bent wheel. The carbon frame of this bike has held up amazingly, it's still looks like new, even after several more crashes, although, I did crack the handlebar in one of them.
