Road Cycling “It is by riding a bicycle that you learn the contours of a country best, since you have to sweat up the hills and coast down them. Thus you remember them as they actually are, while in a motor car only a high hill impresses you, and you have no such accurate remembrance of country you have driven through as you gain by riding a bicycle.” -- Ernest Hemingway

Going on any interesting rides this weekend?

Well?

It's supposed to be quite nice here this weekend, so I'm going exploring ... mainly to see if they have rebuilt a road they removed earlier this year. They completely removed a large section of road making it impossible to do a loop I really liked. Here's hoping the road is back, and better than ever!

I'm going on the "diva ride" for my team's shop. I have no idea what to expect. It's a 29 miler, but I'm throwing the lights on (it's been FOGGY in the morning) and riding over there. I think it's 17 miles or so to the start. I'll take my camera.

3 Gap!

edit: I think we are not going to go due to the difficulty of obtaining gasoline. We don't want to get stranded on the highway.

Just curious ... how come so many of you need to find groups to ride with? What's wrong with riding alone, or with one or two good friends or family members?

Mountain biking in the Kananaskis!

It'll be the first real mountain bike ride for me this year because I've spent every available ride opportunity on my new Vortex. I need to get at least one mountain bike ride in before the snow falls.

I'm probably going to skip the ride with the team since it's at 10:00am and that's pretty early, and I'm not in the mood to ride the route they normally take since it's all hills, and my commute during the week is all hills. I probably need to HTFU but I need to take things at my own pace. I think I'll go somewhere flat and play TT.

I will take my son somewhere one of the days. The other I will attempt to sneak out if my wife is not working some obscene hour. This is not the time of the year for me to take weekend rides. Pretty much just the commutes, trainer, and random errands.

I ride alone 4-5 days a week. My weekend ride is supposed to be my fun, fast pace line ride.

Just a short ride- less than 7 miles each way- but in between I'll be building a Habitat for Humanity home.

I did 40miles today, longest ride for myself. I feel pretty good too oddly enough.

One thing that puzzles me though is that it always seems to me at least that the first 5-10 miles are the most difficult ? Perhaps I'm odd.

I was planning on doing the Twin Light ride in NJ on Sunday, but it doesn't look good for the weather. If I'm going to get caught in the rain I'd rather be closer to home or at least within range of the NYC subway.

I was all set to go out today and do a quick ride in Prospect Park, but it started to rain long before I even had a chance.

Next week I'll be in the Berkshires in Massachusetts, and I'll try to get a ride or two in up there.

I got back a little while ago from a 33mile ride. It was great, I woke up feeling rested and strong and wasnt even planning on riding this morning but the wife and 3 kids were still sleeping so I snuck out around 7:15 and left a note

I made my way to the mup then through downtown portland, then up to Terwilger Road which is a very curvy/hilly road. I took it kind of easy so I wouldnt burn out and stayed around 9-11mph on the climbs. I have been waiting to ride the whole thing, about 8 miles 1 way or so. The road is great with a 25mph speed limit and great pavement and big bike lane. I took food for the first time and 1 big water bottle. There wasnt much so I just grabbed 4 oreos and surpirsingly they made a big difference.

I was pretty proud of myself, there is one pretty steep hill, about a 1/4 mile maybe a little less. I came down about 32mph from the other side and decided to htfu and see if I could make it with out easy gears. I stood up and rode as hard as I could and kept it right about 23mph the whole way to the top...woo hoo. Im getting stronger every week.

However I got passed and could not keep up with the two girls in full pink kits......o well, they must have been pros or something......

Doing my third 90km ride this week.

90km Wednesday.
50km Friday
90km Saturday.. and then tomorrow... perhaps it is too much?

Today was horrible with 50km of fairly strong headwind and painful thighs from the first km. Sadly the wind had calmed on the return(!)
Tomorrow is a group ride. Part bunch, part paceline so I'm thinking it's going to be a bit gentler.

I killed a squirrel today. My first riding fatality since the possum I took out during college in 1986.
