Road Cycling “It is by riding a bicycle that you learn the contours of a country best, since you have to sweat up the hills and coast down them. Thus you remember them as they actually are, while in a motor car only a high hill impresses you, and you have no such accurate remembrance of country you have driven through as you gain by riding a bicycle.” -- Ernest Hemingway

Terrible habit but I can't seem to quit. I cut down at least to the point where I think it shouldn't affect my cardio THAT much. But man I always think if I never started smoking, doing centuries would be so much easier.

I don't smoke. I won't smoke. And if you need some motivation to stop smoking, heh, just have me over for a few days. You will rue the day you got addicted.

It defeats the purpose of cycling, IMO.

You are in denial. See your Physician and get a Rx for Chantix. It is the best current smoking cessation aid. It really helps many people get over the hump. I am an Int Med MD.

Quit...

If you fail try again...

And again...

Try any aids you need...

It will eventually stick...

It will be worth it...

But...

Once a nicotine addict...

Always a nicotine addict...

You can quit. I did over a year ago. Sadly, my cycling is no stronger or weaker. I never really felt crappy when i smoked. Maybe thats why. I smell better and now I have an extra 4k a year to spend on cycling stuff I don't need. Good luck

Hammertoe, the "always a * addict" covers just about every addiction. Luckily I never went back to cigarettes but on the other hand I haven't quit anything else

You need more motivation. Every time you are out riding, try playing mind games like sprinting and trying to catch up to the cute girl a mile ahead. You'll probably still look like a dork--all bikers do--pulling up to her but at least it's motivation to stop smoking

And of course, botto. But he only smokes Gitanes non-filters, and only after a race or sex.

Embrace your nicotine addiction. Smoke while riding. It looks cool. Find and carry a carbon fiber lighter.

Don't wear a helmet. Better to die from head trauma than rotting away from lung cancer or emphysema.

I quit cold turkey on Valentine's Day over 24 years ago.

I still have occasional dreams where I take a puff. The resulting feeling of dread that I will have to go through withdrawal all over again is horrible.

The really scary thing is that my mother quit in the early 1960's and died of lung cancer in 1998. My father quit even earlier and had a lung lobe removed a couple of years ago.

One word: Chantix. (Or Champix in MX) Stuff is awsome! My brother has been on and off for years. Tried Chantix, now he doesn't smoke.

FWIW, I quit the old fashioned way. Definitely improved my performance.

I quit smoking in 1989. I was smoking four packs a day. The nurse said my lungs sounded like cellophane crinkling and she even let me listen to it. Since then I have run marathons and biked for miles. You betcha my quality of life is better. Yeah, I have dreams where I'm smoking. I even LIKE the smell of smoke when a smoker is lighting up. Sometimes I fight it everyday but the withdrawl if I start again would be awful. Besides I wouldn't be able to bike as well.

quit dude. your body will thank you.

I can see your point. However, in my case it was completely differant. I smoked for years in my early 20's. I couldn't put them down. When I started coughing up brown goo, I realized maybe this bad for me. I quite cold turkey as well, sucked it up, and haven't looked back. Don't dream about it either.

Life's good.

In my past experience girls that far away are rarely cute when you get close to them hell even from across the bar its hard to tell sometimes..... good from far but far from good hahahaha.

Anyway, buying a bike was my "tool/aid" to quit. But I still smoke here and there but way less than the pack a day I was smoking. Usually its just at work bushing elbows with the bosses or to take a "union break"

My riding is definitly better now than at the start its nice to have some more lung capacity

What's with the "I can't" crap?

Cold turkey. It's the only way. 1 minute at a time.

Best thing I ever did for myself.

Good luck -

Beth
