Why do people throw stuff at us?
Last night i was pegged by a full water bottle as i was riding home. What kind of mentality does it take for someone to do such a thing? i was out on an isolated country road (which had an amazing bike lane) with my lights blazing. Just as a small pickup truck went by i was was startled by a sudden thud on my bike and a spray of water about my legs. As i watched the truck speed off, it almost looked as if might turn around and finish the job. My concern heightened when i watched it pull off the side of the road a ways about a mile ahead of me, where it hung out with its lights on for a bit. i turned off my lights for the rest of the ride so that i was no longer a blinking target and made a detour in order to avoid further contact. The water bottle itself hit my cranks, and i didn't go down or anything, but the whole affair made me quite sad. i don't really do not understand, and maybe it is a good thing, why someone would want to perpetrate such a random act of violence. A water balloon i could begrudgingly understand as a mean-spirited sort of prank, but a full waterbottle could really hurt someone. And as if that were not enough, i then had my neighbor's dog startle me as it jumped out at me on the dark dirt road that i live off of. As it chased me, i gave it a stout kick, which made me feel even worse as i am an animal lover (though not so much as to allow for such inappropraiate and dangerous behavior). Sorry for the rant, just a little bummed on a society that could produce such a thing. Ashe.

Reason #45, sadly, why I don't ride those beautifully isolated country roads. Just too many humans who forget how to be human when passing humans on bicycles.

P.S.,
It starts young. Part of my schooling involves going to schools and watching kindergarteners. Most kids are all right.
There are always a couple who get kicks out of flicking other kids' ears when the teacher's not watching.

If you ask one of them, they were just 'having a bit of fun.'
Of course, if you tried to have the same 'bit of fun' at their expense, they'd get five friends and beat your teeth out. Just another day in the red states.

I had a couple in a car throw a water bottle at my friend and I riding home one night. Turns out you shouldn't do this kind of stuff less than a km from your home because cyclists can sprint faster than the speed limit in order to catch you.
Stopped in front of their house on a public road and watched them exit their car. They hurriedly got out and ran inside. We didn't do anything illegal or say anything in retaliation. I think that was enough to let them know that sort of **** could carry consequences.

hmm..no bull**** if i were you i would take some self defense classes or something, get some more confidence, if someone threw a water bottle at me i would be so happy if they pulled off to the side of the road and waited for me lol
keep in mind, they are the *******s, they're probably mad because they just filled their gas tank, they're probably mad because you're motivated enough to get on a bike, they're probably mad because their lives suck, whatever it is, don't let someone else's problems get you down..

they were trying to hand you water, like you see in the races. and you didn't notice so they tossed towards you, atleast it didn't go in your spokes. i woulda stopped and picked up the water.
next time that happens write down the license plate or take a picture or better yet call the cops right then and there.

Only bras and pants come my way as well...must be the OP's aftershave or bad fashion sense...or maybe he lives where they pile up old cars in the front yard.
Folks in them there parts don't take a shinin' to fancy boys riding CF bikes.

no someone threw a cup of water at me when i was cycling through a london borough. not that i was surprised they were off a council estate and clearly lacking braincells. there were about 7 of them around 15 years old, i slammed on my brakes, turned round and gave them what for. I then changed my route to a less bumpy road as the many emails I had written to the council to fix it had gone unanswered.

they must have finally gotten word about critical mass.
otherwise they'd obviously never do this. right??
b/c we all know that cars would love cycles if CM was gone...

Why would someone do such a thing? Well, they were in their truck, at night, which automatically makes them feel both empowered and anonymous. They were also going fast and you were going slow. Really, though, as someone else said, they would give little answer for their actions other than that they were just having fun. So you see there isn't any real rationale behind this behavior. They're either kids or trash and neither group thinks much about what they do. They just do it.
You'll have to either ride different routes or accept the risk of riding on an isolated, high-speed road at night. It shouldn't have to be that way but in our society, most people do whatever they want because they feel they have a right to do it or even in the absence of a "right", they just do it anyway.

Don't mince words
There's no accounting for human beings.
Many are just asshats.
Glad you weren't hurt. And that's surprising to hear about SLO, since it's such a bike-friendly place.
