Road Cycling “It is by riding a bicycle that you learn the contours of a country best, since you have to sweat up the hills and coast down them. Thus you remember them as they actually are, while in a motor car only a high hill impresses you, and you have no such accurate remembrance of country you have driven through as you gain by riding a bicycle.” -- Ernest Hemingway

Sorry to hear that. Do you have any other information? Was this a crash on the descent of Hogpen?

Tragic! The descent down hogpen gap is dangerous even for a skilled mountain rider. You can exceed 55 MPH and never turn your crankset.

I've been riding these gaps for years and still have to show respect. I'm not sure someone who rides primarily in Florida could have been properly prepared for such a thing. I am very sad for her and her family. This should have been the thrill of her life, not the end.

First two miles of the Hogpen descent are like dropping off a table. Just straight down screaming.

My sympathies to her family and friends.

+1

I'm assuming that this year was like most years and that the ride was from east to west on Hogpen. Once you crest it is straight down for a long way and STEEP. Very scary stuff.

This is very sad.

Damn.

A friend of mine met her and the other Miamians on the first half of the ride and said she was very upbeat and full of life.

I always call the top of Hogpen the jumping off spot, because it looks like the road just comes to a sudden end from a distance it get so steep so fast. And I my self have blown a front tire and went into a ditch at about 35mph on the hog last year. That was August 2007 and I haven't ridden it since.

This is certainly very sad news. I have being in a couple of the organized rides her club puts out (links above), and they are an outstanding group of people. I can only imagine her being one of those. Certainly a great loss to her family and community. I know I got an email of a ride they were going to start in her honor, but I was not going to be around to attend. That was before the news of her passing. I hope they turn it into an annual event. They know how to throw a good ride for sure. Maybe making it an annual trip to Hogpen would be a nice touch.
