53 miles from the annual Apple Butter Boil in Perry County, PA. A perfect day, beautiful ride, and outstanding churchlady food:
Volunteers stirring the apple butter:
The Juniata River - had to stop for the photo-op:
my bro-in-law shedding the arm warmers...temps started at 46 but got into the low 70's by the end...not bad for October
weird little dog?
At the end there was potpie:
and more:
and there was PIE!

A perfect day in west-central NJ. Five of us did 50 mi., 4100 ft climbing and 18.3 mph avg. The weather guys say it's going to be perfect for about the next five days.
I love my bike.
Note: We picked up chicken at the local church fall fair. I've just been called to supper to eat it. Later.

Had one of the slowest 100 mile days, evah! But considering I set out to do half that, its all good.
Junk miles, on a day like today there is no such thing.

54 miles on Skyline Drive in Shenandoah NP. Perfect weather, great conditions. The leaves aren't anywhere near their peak "color" yet, but the road was jammed with leaf peepers. I sucked down way too many SUV fumes. I don't think I'll try that ride again until the leaves are all on the ground...

Temp: 6C (~40F) & and bit windy.
I thought the route we were doing today was about 26-28 km round trip. I wanted to do a shorter ride today because I'm recovering from a rather painful injury.
So off we went ... riding against the wind ... to a small community hall in the country where there was a get-together I wanted to drop in at. We stopped there and had a nice chat with various ones of my coworkers, and then headed back. On the way back we were accosted by an irate driver who was informed in no uncertain terms that we were allowed to be there on the road. He slunk away.
Total distance: 50.1 kms ... just a bit more than I'd guessed!!

I led a club ride called Ghosts of Antietam Prelude. (I didn't make up this ride, so I'm not sure where "prelude" comes from.) 59 miles for me. I've lost a lot of form in the past 5 weeks when I was last on some of these roads. Fortunately, so did most of my riding buddies. :-)
Best part was the tour through Antietam National Battlefield. Second best part was twenty-two road cyclists crossing a stream boulder-by-boulder and passing the bikes up five feet to the where the bridge ended. The bridge was out and I hadn't checked the route. Also nice is that everyone actually took it in stride and once we were all ready to resume, off we road. I wish I had brought my camera! Someone else took photos, but we have to wait for the film to be developed. Doh! I should have used the cell phone.

82 solo miles today.... 3,086 feet of climbing. Mostly zone 2, except a few hills I jammed up. Other than the wind, it was great.

90 miles solo. couldn't ask for a better day of weather in joisey. took a couple of wrong turns so my route varied a bit from what i intended to do. wanted to do a century but i set out later than planned and had to get back home to get ready for a special-occasion dinner date.

Has coddling tendencies.
First of all, thanks to the New Englanders for sharing those fantastic pictures!
And on the extreme opposite side of the US, here's some shots of my ride in So Cal. 38 miles with 3600 feet of climbing throughout the Santa Monica Mts. Average speed was 12.1, total time 3 hrs, 10 minutes. I started mid-afternoon in idealic 70 degrees, but by the time I got home it had chilled down to 60. I changed the last 8 miles specifically because of the cooling temps. Had I gone with the first option, I'd have flown down a 5 mile long canyon that's typically much cooler than the surrounding temps, plus it would be in the shade by the time I was going down, so that's double the discomfort. I didn't bring another layer with me, which would have solved that problem. So instead of that "cold" canyon, I chose one that was more sun splashed and open. I was still quite chilled by the time I got home, and for the first time in many months I took a hot shower instead of a cool one following a ride. Last week it was 90 at night, so 60 felt like it was freezing by comparison!
Here's the view at the top of Saddle Peak, 2350 ft up. A rare shot of clear skies all the way to Palos Verdes.
Here's a close up of the same shot. Given the rugged terrain, I'm often amazed at how people can
build homes up in these hills. It's called $.
Here's a shot on the way down Piuma, which is one of the more fun, rollercoaster-like descents in the Santa Monica Mts.
Gonna be down there in 5 minutes or less.
One of many sharp turns along Piuma. Fun going down, sure, but up? Haven't gone up Piuma yet.
A dry creek bed in an oak grove. Just a few more months and it won't be dry.
That looong shadow tells me I better git before the cold rolls in.

40 something miles in a brutal wind (26 mph sustained, 34 mph gusts). After missing the split, I decided to bag it and ride back to the shop rather than chase the lead group. Screw it, my season's over; no need to torture myself.

Just did my standard 20 Loop up to Mulholland and back down into the Valley.
Got chased by a big dog for about a mile while I was climbing up a steep hill. I finally got him off me by squirting him with my watter bottle. I should have done that in the very beginning.

45 miles to Agua Dulce California. 12.9 mph avg, 3:29 in the saddle and 45.7 max speed, a new personal record.
Soledad Canyon
Vasquez Rocks, named after Tiburicio Vasquez, a Mexican bandit who hid from the law in these parts. He was hanged in the early 20th Century in San Francisco
I've lost 15 lbs since I started riding in March! Haha!
Many films (and Star Trek) have been filmed at this site.

In an effort to betray my common sense and all the promises I've done to myself to never ride with other people, I went to join a club/store ride about 1 hour south from my house. Did not know what to expect, but the crowd was about 20 of the most novice, slow, fredilicious, but good hearted people one can imagine. Very slow ride and only 25 miles long. The goal of the ride was for me to survive it in one piece. 9 out of 10 people there had never ridden with other people before, much less 20 others at the same time.

53 miles, 4450 feet of climbing. If I had started earlier I could have gotten over a mile of climbing in.

I wish the people who built these roads had discovered the switchback. I was actually surprised that one of the roads didn't simply go the straightest way up the side of the hill.

Did the Mayo Lake Cyclism ride in Roxboro,NC. I thought I'd do a short 30 miler alone, but three of my club riders were there riding the 75K so I rode with them. First 30 mi. were great, seemed like I hadn't lost anything from early last month. Next 15 mi. were only OK, I felt my thighs were tired. Hmmmm. Last 6 really sucked. I can't believe I lost that much in a month. I can see if I want to improve or even maintain I'm going to have to ride farther and more often than I did last month.
The weather was great, it was good to see freinds and they gave us a free lunch, supported ride with snacks and a T-shirt for $30. Sort of a bargain in my book. I'll ride it again next year.
